14.04.2005 Russia disagrees with Strasbourg ruling on Chechens case Pavel Laptev, Russia’s special envoy to the European Human Rights Court, intends to appeal against the decision of this court on the action brought by a group of Chechens against Georgia and Russia. «In terms of its subjectivity, political motivation and commitment to double standards, this decision has gone far further than all the other famous rulings of the European Court in relation to the Russian Federation," Laptev believes. According to the written decision that was circulated on Tuesday by the Strasbourg HQs of the court, complaints from 13 people had been considered within the case of «Shamayev and others against Georgia and Russia." According to the files of the case, all the plaintiffs are ethnic Chechens and are either Russian or Georgian citizens. According to the case, ... >> full

13.04.2005 Putin’s promise The world must hold the Russian leader to his pledge to quit in 2008 Even in 2000, there was a hint of menace in Vladimir Putin’s promise to establish a «dictatorship of the law» in Russia. It was hard to conceive of any acceptable sort of dictatorship in the heartland of the former Soviet Union, especially if it was to be run by an unknown former Soviet spy. But so flagrant had been the general contempt for all laws under Boris Yeltsin, his predecessor, that Mr Putin was given the benefit of the doubt. He was elected President and went on to enjoy one of the longest political honeymoons in recent memory. Five years on, the honeymoon is over and Mr Putin is preoccupied with how his time in power might end. Yesterday he assured an audience in Hannover that he would honour the Russian Constitution and step down in 2008, whether ... >> full

Burdjanadze is lobbying for an EU-led border observation mission to replace an OSCE mission that has been vetoed by Russia. In an interview with RFE/RL, Burdjanadze said that Tbilisi also wants the EU to put pressure on Russia to withdraw its bases from Georgia and to play a constructive role in resolving the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Georgia is asking for greater EU support in its fraught relations with Russia. This time, the message is being carried by Georgian parliament speaker Nino Burdjanadze, who arrived in Brussels yesterday. She is one of the most senior politicians in the country, having briefly assumed presidential powers during the ousting of Eduard Shevardnadze in late 2003. Burdjanadze told RFE/RL in ... >> full
