At least 6 killed in clashes in Russia's North CaucasusReuters6:34 a.m. CDT, April 11, 2011
MAKHACHKALA, Russia (Reuters) - At least three policemen and three suspected Islamist militants were killed in clashes in Russia's North Caucasus on Monday, media reported, underlining the Kremlin's struggle to contain violence there. A decade after Russian federal forces drove separatists out of power in Chechnya, almost daily violence plagues the mainly Muslim North Caucasus where rebels want to establish an Islamic state under strict sharia law. "The police returned fire at a group of militants, killing two of them," national anti-terror committee spokesman Nikolai Sintsov said on the state-run Rossiya 24 television channel, adding that those clashes took place in the Dagestan region. He added that at least three policemen were also killed in the village of Kidero near Dagestan's western border with Chechnya. MAKHACHKALA, Russia - Police in Russia's southern province of Dagestan say gunmen have killed a local imam. Police spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov says the two attackers fired gunshots into the window of the imam's home in Yasnaya Polyana village, killing him Saturday. Nikolai Sintsov, a spokesman for Russia's Anti-Terrorist Committee, blamed Islamic militants for the killing, saying the imam had denounced them. Dagestan and other provinces in Russia's North Caucasus have been destabilized by an Islamic insurgency that has spread following two separatist wars in nearby Chechnya. Dagestan has emerged as the militants' main base, and they regularly attack police and other authorities. Many moderate local imams oppose radical Islam, leaving them vulnerable to assassinations. ©
