Militant killed, two injured in Russia's North Caucasus

16/02/2009 09:07 MAKHACHKALA, February 16 (RIA Novosti) - One militant has been killed and two others injured after police in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan opened fire on their car, a local police spokesman said on Monday.

The militants were killed by police in Daghestan's Khasavyurtovsky district late on Sunday. Officers received a tipoff that the suspected gunmen were in the car and tried to stop it, but the driver did not follow police instructions.

"Police opened fire. As a result one person was killed and two injured," the spokesman said.

On February 2, following a series of highly unusual events, the newly appointed head of the Dagestani branch of the Russian federal tax service was prevented from taking his position. Vladimir Radchenko and his superior Pyotr Kovalev were not even allowed to cross the administrative border into Dagestan: they were told that the Dagestani police could not guarantee their safety. At the same time, several hundred people in Makhachkala protested against the new appointment (Kommersant, February 3).
