Prospects for Dagestan’s Oil and Gas Industry

Publication: North Caucasus Weekly

As early as the middle of 19th century, oil was extracted to the surface through wells on the territory of Dagestan. With the participation of Swedish oil industrialist Ludvig Nobel, several relatively shallow oil wells were operating in Dagestan by the end of that century (http://www.caspiy.net/dir3/west/3.html). Yet it was only in the 1920s that systematic studies of the geology of the foothill areas began in earnest, and in 1924 the drilling of deep exploratory wells commenced. In 1936 the first trainload of oil left the Izberbash railway station. In January 1937, in accordance with the order issued by the People’s Commissar of Heavy Industry Sergo Ordzhonikidze, the Dagneft Trust was established. The same year marked the introduction of well drilling under the sea shelf. Dagestan’s oil played an important role in supplying the frontline with petroleum ...

Servicemen's executor sentenced to life imprisonment in Dagestan

mar 31 2009, 20:00

On March 31, the Supreme Court of Dagestan sentenced Arbi Dandaev, a resident of Chechnya, to life imprisonment for his personal participation, during the militants' attack on Dagestan in 1999, in execution of six soldiers.

The state prosecution asked for 22 years of imprisonment, but Judge of the Supreme Court of Dagestan Shikhali Magomedov passed the top possible verdict - life imprisonment.

The investigation has established that Arbi Dandaev, an employee of the so-called "National Security Service of Ichkeria", took part in the attack of Shamil Basayev's and Khattab's groupings on Dagestan in 1999.

The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told at the Prosecutor's Office of Dagestan that Dandaev took part, in the attack on Tukhchar village, Novolak District of Dagestan, took part in executing six militaries of the Russian Army, and personally cut a throat of one of them.

New War Zone Emerges in Southern Dagestan

Publication: North Caucasus Weekly
March 27, 2009 01:51 PM

Reports about armed encounters have been streaming in from Dagestan for the past week. For three days, the Russian army jointly with the Federal Security Service (FSB) and Dagestan’s Interior Ministry carried out a military operation aimed at eliminating a group of militants in the vicinity of the village of Kakashura in Dagestan’s Karabudakhkentsky district. The district is located 30 kilometers to the south of the republic’s capital, Makhachkala, and southeast of the town of Buinaksk, meaning that it lies in the direction of the Caspian Sea.

The aforementioned military operation allegedly began after a traffic police patrol car came under attack in the Derbentsky district (in the southern part of Dagestan on the border with Azerbaijan). During the incident, which occurred on March 18, at about ten in the evening local time, a police officer was ...

against fighters in the area [File: EPA]

At least five soldiers and several anti-government fighters have been killed in clashes in Russia's southern Dagestan region.

Clashes between government security forces and armed opposition groups started on Thursday in the Karabudakhkentsky district, about 30km south of the regional capital Makhachkala.

"This is the third day of a special operation to rid the area of militants," Takhir Ramazanov, the deputy head of Dagestan's internal ministry, told Russia's state-run Vesti-24 television on Saturday.

"It has become clear they have fled to the mountains."

The bodies of 10 fighters were reportedly found after security forces pounded their positions using mortars and helicopter gunships. Four others were shot dead as they drove their car through Makhachkala late on Friday.

Vesti-24 showed four bodies lying among shattered glass near a battered, white Lada car.

Ramazanov said the men in the car had been involved in ...
