Prague Watchdog: 15 Years Of War...

posted by eagle on December, 2009 as War in Chechnya

15 years of war...

By Sergey Markedonov, political scientist, special to Prague Watchdog

Moscow

On December 11,1994, units of the Russian army and interior ministry entered the territory of Chechnya, which for three years prior to this had been trying to implement a form of national independence outside the framework of Russia. Thus the Russian Federation, the state which had resulted from a struggle with the Soviet centre, ran into a separatist problem of its own. This problem became clear almost immediately after the victory over the Emergency Committee in August 1991, and to this day it cannot be considered to have gained a final resolution. In 1994 Russia's leadership attempted to solve the "Chechen problem" by force, relying on the superiority of Russia’s military, political and socio-economic resources. That  attempt was unsuccessful. The first Chechen campaign ended with a defeat which, for the country that was ...

10 to 15 apostates killed by Mujahideen in fightings in Vedeno district

Publication time: 22 December 2009, 17:41

Sources from the Caucasus Emirate's Province of Nokhchicho (aka Ichkeria/Chechnya) reported that during 5-days small-arms battles near the settlements of Dargo and Belgatoi, Vedeno District, 10 and 15 apostates had been killed.

3 Mujahideen fighters martyred (inshaAllah). The commander of the Tsentoroi Sector of the Caucasus Emirate's Eastern Front, Emir Sawab is among the martyrs.

The apostates were supported by Russian infidels from Special Forces units, helicopter gunships and artillery.

It is to mentioned that the  apostates' ringleader  Kadyrov earlier said that  4 Mujahideen had been killed in Dargo, and that one of the reserve winter bases of the Mujahideen had been destroyed.

After initial allegations that the Mujahideen were blocked and soon every one of them would be killed, apostates in their later statement on Tuesday explained that due to "weather conditions and snowfall it was very ...

Occupiers openly blew up family of murdered opposition leader M. Aushev

On Wednesday Russian sources reporting from puppet “police” of Ingushetia, informed that near a checkpoint on the road towards Magas, a car blew up with 4 passengers.

According to the apostate version, on approaching the checkpoint, the car suddenly turned around and started driving in the opposite direction.

“Police” opened fire and the car blew up. As a result 2 people were killed and 2 were wounded.

KC: Chechen Kidnapped Several Months Ago Announced To Be Liquidated

posted by eagle on as War in Chechnya

Chechen kidnapped several months ago announced to be liquidated

Publication time: Today at 14:48 Djokhar time

Employees of Chechen apostate "police" have handed over the body of a 21-year-old citizen of the city of Argun  to his relatives. He was kidnapped by armed persons several months ago after he had been released from a "police" station. The militia asserts that the young man was killed in the recent armed clash with Mujahideen. However, human rights activists and his relatives are sure that he fell victim of an extrajudicial execution.

The story of Alikhan Markuev, 21, a resident of Argun, became broadly known due to human rights activists and journalists of the “Novaya Gazeta”. In the end of August, the paper published an article about the fate of former militant Alikhan Markuev.

The young man, who was amnestied in 2008, this summer became an object of steadfast attention of "police". He was repeatedly summoned to interrogations, tortured and beaten, ...

The Economist: A Small Corner, Very Bloody

A small corner, very bloody

Dec 10th 2009
From The Economist print edition

Chechnya may have been largely pacified, but it is far from being at peace

Towers of Stone: The Battle of Wills in Chechnya. By Wojciech Jagielski. Translated by Soren Gauger. Seven Stories Press; 329 pages; $19.95. Buy from Amazon.com

FORMIDABLE, useful in war and, though picturesque, impractical in peacetime, the stone towers that dot Chechnya’s mountains could be regarded as symbols of its people. Wojciech Jagielski’s book sets new standards for gritty reporting of Russia’s most miserable corner, and the dreadful damage done to it by both outsiders and the Chechens’ own leaders.

Most readers will know something of the Chechen story: a toxic mix of terrorism, kidnapping, guerrilla warfare and reprisals. Two wars have ruined the country. Both began with attempts by Russia, over 100 times more populous, to restore order in what the Kremlin sees as a troublesome province. The first war, from 1994 to ...
