Is the Main Source of Chechen Rebel Weapons Georgia, or the Russian Army?Publication: North Caucasus Analysis October 29, 2010 03:32 PM
Bomb disposal experts in the Chechen capital destroyed a large improvised explosive device in a controlled explosion today (October 29). Police discovered the bomb in the village of Katayama in Grozny’s Staropromyslovsky district based off of information provided by a detained rebel accomplice. The device consisted of a plastic bucket filled with explosives equivalent to five kilograms of TNT. On October 28, police found an explosive-laden belt in Grozny -- also, according to police, as a result of information from a captured rebel accomplice. The explosive belt, which contained explosives equal to seven kilograms of TNT, was discovered in the attic of a house. On October 25, a home-made bomb consisting of six kilograms of explosives was found 70 meters from the entrance of the republican theater-concert hall in ... >> full

Attack on Parliament in Grozny: Gain or Loss for the Rebels?Publication: North Caucasus Analysis October 28, 2010 03:33 PM
The attack perpetrated by four Chechen suicide bombers or shahids in downtown Grozny on October 19th, 2010 struck everyone by surprise. An explosion occurred early in the morning around 8:45 in the fenced yard of the Chechen parliament building killing two police officers on duty standing at the checkpoint, and wounding six others. Later that day, a parliament official died during the shootout while 11 civilians were wounded (www.yuga.ru/news/204841/). Ramzan Kadyrov, Chechnya’s pro-Russian leader rejected those numbers and claimed instead that only two people were wounded during the storming of the parliament. What really happened in Grozny on Tuesday, October 19th? The opinion voiced by some political analysts alleging that the incident was a defeat for the rebels does not seem to be well founded. (www.svobodanews.ru/content/article/2194856.html) This point of view is based ... >> full

European Reports Paint Grim Picture of Kadyrov’s ChechnyaPublication: Eurasia Daily Monitor October 26, 2010 06:10 PM Ramzan Kadyrov’s autocratic rule in Chechnya was until recently seen by the Kremlin –and, to some extent, even by many independent observers– as "the lesser of evils.” Bearing in mind the two devastating wars and massive breaches of human rights this republic experienced, the Kremlin’s bet on Kadyrov seems to have paid off. However, the latest attacks –on the Chechen parliament and a raid by insurgents in late August on Kadyrov’s home village of Tsentoroi (aka Khosi-Yurt) –exposed Kadyrov’s vulnerability and deceptiveness of the quietude in Chechnya. On October 19, the European Parliament began to discuss a joint motion for a resolution on the situation in the North Caucasus. The deputies expressed their concern about the unabated violence and human rights abuses by government forces in the region. The Europeans stressed the absence of rule of ... >> full
