Chechen Prez praises police actions in attack near Interior Ministry Moscow | Friday, May 15 2009 IST
Chechnya's President Ramzan Kadyrov has highly praised the police actions in the suicide bomber attack today near the Interior Ministry in the Chechen capital Grozny in which two security officers were killed three others injured.
''The terrorists have underestimated the courage, professionalism and the capacity to act decisively in extreme situations shown by police officers, who frustrated terrorists' plans by sacrificing their lives,'' Mr Kadyrov told media persons.
''A decision has been made to confer state decorations upon the deceased officers,'' he said, adding the terrorists had planned to spread terror amongst the Chechen population.
According to the preliminary investigation, a suicide bomber set off an explosive device 500 meters from the Chechen Interior Ministry in central Grozny.
Militant attacks have intensified in Chechnya since the official lifting last month of the Kremlin's decade-long anti-terrorist campaign in the North Caucasus republic.
Despite Kadyrov's claim last month that the war against insurgents had been won, Russian commanders warned in late April that terrorists were planning a series of new attacks.
