Witness in the case of Nalchik attack refused from her evidences given three years ago

Today, the Supreme Court of Kabardino-Balkaria, which considers the case about attack on Nalchik on October 13, 2005, listened to two anonymous witnesses and Albina Karmova, a resident of Svetlovodskoe village, Zolskiy District.

It became clear from Ms Karmova's answers that at the moment of the attack on Nalchik she worked in the administration of Svetlovodskoe, and among her duties issuance of certificates to the population. As to defendants Zaur Tokhov and Anzor Sasikov, she issued certificates on composition of their families and their social characteristics. As it became clear during the interrogation, the characteristics were negative.

According to Karmova, the characteristics were written by the head of the village administration, and she only typed and signed them, as at that moment she replaced the head of administration, who was on vacations. As to the ...

Balkars Again Protest Perceived Discrimination

Some 1,500 Balkars congregated on July 25 at the monument near Nalchik to the victims of Soviet-era political reprisals to discuss the impact and repercussions of the "counterterror operation" conducted in the Elbruz district in the extreme west of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic (KBR) from June 30 until early on July 13.

That operation effectively isolated the district, many of whose residents scrape a living from tourism, at the start of the summer tourist season. The republican authorities subsequently claimed to have secured large quantities of weaponry and to have averted several planned terrorist acts, but there were no reports of fighting, or of any militants being apprehended. The news agency Regnum dubbed the exercise the "most mystifying counterterror operation ever."

KBR Academics Reject FSB Claims

Unnamed faculty members at institutes of higher education in the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic (KBR) have questioned the veracity of claims that the North Caucasus resistance is openly seeking to recruit new members among students.

Vladimir Serdyuk, who heads the KBR subsidiary of the Federal Security Service (FSB), was quoted on July 19 as saying that resistance emissaries are active in all the republic's institutes of higher education. He offered no estimates of the number of students they have suborned, but noted that the perpetrators of the most audacious terrorist attacks in the KBR are all young.

Faculty members questioned by Regnum conceded the possibility that resistance emissaries approach and seek to win over some students, but denied that any concerted effort to do so is under way. They stressed that there ...
