25.6.2009

The President of KBR Arsen Kanokov believes we can hardly hope to recover from recession in the nearest future. The year of 2010 can become a watershed one for the Russian economy. The head of the republic said about it speaking at the meeting of the members of the Association "The Council of Municipal Offices of KBR". According to the president while assessing perspectives of recovering from the recession the majority of experts who participated in St. Petersburg International Economic Forum are of the same opinion.

The delegation of KBR headed by Arsen Kanokov also visited St. Petersburg. "Participation in the Forum was interesting and useful. I advise that all ministers and heads of municipal governments study the papers of the Forum to understand the situation better and to know what to do".

Kabardino-Balkaria had prepared for the crisis beforehand and it helped to avoid obvious crisis manifestations. "We were right when ...

On June 12 hundreds of protesters in the Elbrus district of Kabardino-Balkaria blocked the highway that connects this mountainous resort region with the republic's lowlands. The protestors were current and former tourist industry employees demanding shares in a tourist company, a just distribution of land and a shrinking of the border security zone (Kavkazsky Uzel, June 12). Kabardino-Balkaria President Arsen Kanokov visited with the protestors himself to try and calm them down, and managed to persuade them to unblock the roads (Interfax, June 12).

Mount Elbrus and its environs are considered the most attractive place in the republic for tourists from Russia as well as from abroad. Elbrus is the highest mountain in the Caucasus and in Europe. One of Russia's oligarchs, Vladimir Potanin, pledged $1 billion in investment into ...

Russian security forces in Nalchik.

Violence appears to be ratcheting up in yet another region of the North Caucasus - Kabardino-Balkaria. The republic's capital, Nalchik, was the scene of a large-scale rebel attack in October 2005 in which 35 law enforcement officers, 12 civilians and 92 rebels were killed, but has otherwise been more quiescent than its neighbors in the region - Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan.

Three policemen were wounded on June 2 when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a car in which they were traveling near the settlement of Neitrino in Kabaradino-Balkaria's Elbrussky district. According to Interfax, a source in the republic's Interior Ministry identified the victims as a pair of road patrol service (DPS) inspectors and a platoon commander of the ministry's patrol-sentry service. The news agency reported that the wounded police officers returned fire but ...
