Nalchik Bomb Attack Endangers the Stability of Kabardino-Balkaria

On May 1, an explosion shook Nalchik, the capital of Kabardino-Balkaria. A home-made explosive device estimated at equaling 3-5 kilograms of TNT went off at the time as current and former republican top officials were entering a tribune set aside for them at the Nalchik hippodrome. One elderly WWII veteran was reportedly killed in the attack while the republic’s former Interior Minister, Khachim Shogenov, and current Culture Minister, Ruslan Firov, were wounded along with 27 other people. The President of Kabardino-Balkaria, Arsen Kanokov, was also expected to attend the event, but changed his work schedule at the last minute (www.gazeta.ru, May 4).

Caucasus blast kills one, wounds scores in Kabardino-Balkaria
More than 10 people were injured when a bomb exploded in Nalchik, the capital of Caucasus' Kabardino-Balkaria republic, Russian agency said.

No fatalities were reported but RIA Novosti news agency said two people were in a grave condition. ITAR-TASS reported that leaders of the republic, including President Arsen Kanokov, did not attend the race meeting.

Kabardino-Balkaria is near Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan but the level of attacks there has been much lower so far than in the other three regions.

One of the most populous regions in the mainly Muslim north Caucasus, Chechnya which declared independency after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 but was attacked by Russian forces in two wars since the mid-1990s.

Still low-level insurgency continues in Muslim states controlled by Russia.

One of the victims of the bombing in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria on Saturday has died and the number of injured has risen to 20, a security source said.

"The total number of injured in the explosion was 21 people. One of them died, another remains in critical condition," he said.

The press service of the republic's emergencies ministry reported that Said Shebzukhov, a World War II veteran born in 1906, died during surgery at Nalchik's main hospital.

The explosion occurred at the Nalchik racetrack during May Day horse races.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev instructed the Interior Ministry and Federal Security Service to investigate the explosion and to ensure security in the republic, the presidential press service said.

Medvedev was briefed by the president of Kabardino-Balkaria, Arsen Kanokov, on measures being taken to assist victims and to maintain public order following the blast.
