Window on Eurasia: Balkar Anger at Nalchik and Moscow Intensifies

Paul Goble

Staunton, October 31 – Representatives of seven Balkar villages are in the fourth month of a hunger strike at the base of the Kremlin wall in Moscow to call attention to the violation of the traditional land-use rights of their community by officials in the bi-national Kabardino-Balkar Republic in the North Caucasus.
Participants in this action have repeatedly said that they were driven to this "extreme measure” because no one in Nalchik or Moscow had paid attention to larger protest meetings in their republic, the result, they say, of corrupt relations between the Kabardinian-dominated government in Nalchik and officials in the Russian center (www.nr2.ru/moskow/306621.html).
The Balkar protest in Moscow has attracted some attention but only about their demands for the restoration of land transferred to the Kabardinians. But now as a result of the publication on Friday of a ...

NatPress: Operation Continues In Kabardino-Balkaria Against Gunmen In Mine

Operation continues in Kabardino-Balkaria against gunmen in mine

23 October 2010 - 23:30 - NatPress

NALCHIK, October 23 (Itar-Tass) The special operation is continuing in the Molybden mine in the city of Tyrnyauz in Kabardino-Balkaria to neutralise gunmen hiding in the mine, a source at the operational headquarters in the republic told Itar-Tass.

The search operation continues during the daytime and at night. Groups of special unit members examine mine sections, and they are replaced by others in some time. The lower part of the nine levels is completely searched through.

The mine sections extend almost 300 kilometres, and not all of the sections are linked with each other. Special unit members have to go there in water up to their knees and in complete darkness.

The group of gunmen was detected on October 20 during a special operation to find and neutralise members of illegal armed groups in the area of the abandoned tungsten-molybdenum plant. The gunmen escaped into one of ...

KC: Fighting In Kabardino-Balkaria: Russian Invaders Send Additional Troops To Elbrus District

Fighting in Kabardino-Balkaria: Russian invaders send additional troops to Elbrus district

Publication time: 22 October 2010, 14:39

After the occupation sources reported about a fighting in Elbrus district in the CE KBK Combined Province, they provide scarce and contradicting information about the situation in abandoned mines of the former Tungsten Ore-Dressing and Processing Company.

In initial summaries, invaders reported they had allegedly killed 3 Mujahideen. However, this information has been confirmed.

KC sources report that a fighting in Elbrus district near the town of Tyrnyauz in vicinity of abandoned mines stopped on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, invaders and puppets reported about a resumption of their "special operation".

In fact, the entire "special operation" has been reduced to calls by invaders and local puppets to Mujahideen from a loudspeaker to lay down arms. The Mujahideen are promised "amnesty" and "a fair trial".

No response followed. According to sources of the Kavkaz Center, Mujahideen may no longer stay in the mine, as the tunnels of the abandoned ...

Fifth anniversary of Nalchik raid marked as instability in Kabardino-Balkaria grows

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
October 19, 2010 04:04 PM

Russian security forces after the 2005 Nalchik militant raid.

On October 13, a rally took place in Nalchik in commemoration of large scale armed clashes in the city on the same day back in 2005. Relatives of victims from the opposing sides, the police and the insurgents, attended the gathering. An estimated 35 policemen and servicemen, 14 civilians and 92 insurgents died in the October 13, 2005 attack, while 58 alleged rebels are currently on trial on terrorism related charges (www.kavkaz-uzel.ru, October 13).

Despite the fact that the police at the time claimed it was a great success, the situation in Kabardino-Balkaria has not improved since then; on the contrary, it has rapidly deteriorated. Besides numerous attacks on the officials and the law enforcement agents, the first ever rebel attack on a hydroelectric plant ...

RFE/RL: Five Years On, Militants In Kabardino-Balkaria Take On New Role

Five Years On, Militants In Kabardino-Balkaria Take On New Role

Law enforcement officers conduct a raid to seize a group of militants in Nalchik.

October 13, 2010
Five years after the multiple attacks by inexperienced, young fighters from the Yarmuk jamaat on police and security facilities in Nalchik, the capital of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic (KBR), the trial of the 58 men identified as the surviving perpetrators is nowhere near its end.

Meanwhile, the Kabardino-Balkar-Karachai (KBK) branch of the North Caucasus insurgency, Yarmuk's successor, has reemerged this year to perpetrate two high-profile attacks and a string of minor killings. More ominously, its fighters are simultaneously acting as a Taliban-style morality police, targeting "dens of iniquity and vice."

An estimated 150-200 young fighters participated in the fighting across Nalchik on October 13-14, 2005. Ninety-two were reported killed and 59 apprehended, of whom one died (whether from natural causes or torture is not clear) before the trial even ...
