Victims of the 1864 exile to be commemorated in Cherkessk on May 21

Cherkessk/Agency Caucasus - Karachai-Cherkessia hosts a series of activities to remember timidly the 21 May 1864 exile, an event that is considered to be one of the largest catastrophes that has ever happened across the Caucasus.

"The Hum of Storm," a play performed on Friday by actors as well as actresses of the Kabarda State Theater in the capital city of Cherkessk, was the first in the series of activities to commemorate the exile.

After the Russian troops had invaded the Caucasian territory, the resistance to the Russian forces failed. It was followed by a vast number of people being forced into exile. Hundreds of thousands of people were killed of several different causes while they were going into exile. It was a kind of genocide that happened in the 19th century. The Russians did not want it to be commemorated fully. Therefore, they only agreed to remember it as an event where some Caucasians fell victim to a war.

The government of Karachai-Cherkessia decided in 1994 to commemorate on May 21 annually the people who had died during the 1864 exile.

On May 21, a large group of people, including senior officials from the administration, will meet in central Cherkessk. The consequences of the Caucasian War will be talked about. On the same day, the villagers in Ali-Berdukovsky, Habez, will have a meeting of mourning for the victims. ÖZ/FT
