MAKHACHKALA, November 3 (Itar-Tass) -- Dagestan's security services have thwarted an attempt against cleric Said Appandi and interior ministry official Nabi Akhadov.
Eight people, one from Tajikistan, one resident of a Dagestanian village and six residents of Makhachkala, were detained in an operation. A lot of arms and ammunition, including explosive devices, were found at places where the people resided, the head of the Dagestanian Interior Ministry’s press service, Mark Tolchinsky told Itar-Tass on Saturday.
A powerful explosive device was found in a VAZ car in Makhachkala a few days ago, Tolchinsky said.
All the detained people confessed they had prepared attacks to kill the cleric and the police official. According to the preliminary information, they were instructed to kill the cleric who more than once publicly expressed criticizm addressed to Wahhabism representatives.
Police official Akhadov, who heads the expert criminal investigation department of Dagestan's Interior Ministry, had participated in special operations to eliminate groups of bandits operating in the republic.
The investigation and operations continue in Dagestan to find and detain other members of the criminal group, which might prepare other attacks against well-known people in the republic.
