RUSSIA, Ingushetia, Nazran. On October 16, in the center of Nazran, a demonstration in memory of Anna Politkovskaya was broken up by authorities. Colleagues of the human rights center "Memorial", Albert Khantygov, Fatima Yandiyeva, Zoya Muradova Zarema Mukusheva, and Magomed Mutsolgov, Chairman of “Mashr” (the Public Association of Relatives of the Disappeared) were detained. "Memorial" worker Ekaterina Sokiryanskaya’s nose was broken.
The human rights center "Memorial" reports that on October 16, in Nazran and in Groznyy, it organized demonstrations in memory of Anna Politkovskaya, who was killed in Moscow on October 7. The organizers informed the local authorities in advance about the forthcoming demonstrations.
The demonstration in the center of Groznyy occurred from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. The local authorities made no effort to prevent it. There wasn’t even an increase in police presence. About fifty people were assembled. Activists of non-governmental organizations who had worked with or encountered Anna Politkovskaya participated, including: Natalie Estemirova, Shakhman Akbulatov, Usam Baysayev, Ekaterina Sokiryanskaya, Mikhail Ezhiyev, Dik Altemirov, and Madina Magomadova.
The demonstration in Nazran began at 4:00 p.m. at the Eternal Flame on Bazorkin Prospekt, a monument to those killed in the World War II. Numerous police and civil authorities disrupted the demonstrators, especially those who held flowers and pictures of Politkovskaya. Ekaterina Sokiryanskaya was hit in the face.
As of 7:30 pm on October 16, those detained were located in the GOVD, charged with administrative offenses.
