The International Circassian Council and The Circassian Cultural Institute (CCI) strongly condemn a Russian offer to send ethnic Circassians from the North Caucasus to Libya to assist Qaddafi loyalists.  Earlier this month several news outlets and blogs reported that an anonymous group of Circassians in the North Caucasus allegedly offered to volunteer as mercenaries to go to Libya to support Muammar Qaddafi's bloody crackdown against the Libyan population.   Given that Article 359 of the Russian Criminal Code mandates that the Russian judicial system prosecute mercenaries, no such investigation has occurred and that Russian media reports by groups calling themselves Circassians of the North Caucasus are nothing more than a Kremlin ruse aimed at bolstering the Qaddafi regime.  ICC and CCI condemn these statements and call upon ...

Jamestown Foundation: Moscow Relies On Russian Orthodox Church To Retain Control Over Minds In The North Caucasus

Moscow Relies on Russian Orthodox Church to Retain Control over Minds in the North Caucasus

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
April 13, 2011 03:12 PM

On March 22, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church decreed redrawing the eparchial boundaries in the North Caucasus. Since the Russian Orthodox Church has been known for close cooperation with the Russian state over the past decade, the move attracted substantial attention from the expert community. A new Vladikavkaz eparchy was established that will govern Orthodox communities across Dagestan, Ingushetia, Chechnya and North Ossetia. Among these four territories the majority of the Orthodox Christians are concentrated in North Ossetia, where the seat of the newly appointed Archbishop Zosima from Kalmykia was designated. The relatively numerous Orthodox communities in Karachaevo-Cherkessia, Kabardino-Balkaria and adjacent parts of the ethnic Russian-populated Stavropol region were united with the center in Pyatigorsk under Bishop Feofilakt from central Russia. The cities of Stavropol ...

Window on Eurasia: Russian Federation on the Way toward Final Disintegration, Kashin Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, April 12 – The process of the disintegration of the Russian empire will finally conclude sometime in the next few years until what some may still want to call Great Russia with a capital in Moscow will be limited to the space between Smolensk and Vladimir, according to Oleg Kashin.

But this development, the Russian journalist says, will have less to do with the actions of nationalist groups, Russian or non-Russian, than with the rise of a generation for whom Moscow is increasingly irrelevant to their identities and concerns, much as the Soviet center became irrelevant to the union republics a quarter of a century ago.

In a March 24 speech in Moscow that has been posted online and sparked widespread discussion, Kashin argues that it is instructive to consider Russia today by recalling how ...

''Russia is sitting on a powder keg''

Publication time: Today at 12:00 Emirate time

A French painter Shemyakin is, by his own admission, a friend of FSB, Putin, Vladimir Bukovsky, Vladimir Vysotsky, etc., as well as a patriot of Russia, but wisely chose to live in the West, gave an interview to the Russian Service of BBC News, in which he was forced to accept the inevitability of imminent death of this country. Shemyakin noted in particular:

"Today Russia is sitting on a powder keg, because you cannot go on this lawlessness anymore. Russian is not stupid. He's just very patient, but do not take patience for stupidity.

You think that the out-of-the-way place, where army officers live, is still in the barracks, and watching on TV as how Abramovich having fun on his yacht, you think it will last long? (at least from this side, it will last forever, because "the Russian officers" ...

Window on Eurasia: Sibirians Leading Revival of ‘Geographic Separatism’ in Russian Federation

Paul Goble

Staunton, April 4 – The "Sibiryak’ movement, in one sense "an ordinary social protest which has taken geographic form,” is now "the most noteworthy part of a general process which people had forgotten about since the middle 1990s, geographic separatism,” according to a Russian political analyst.
Vyacheslav Igrunov, however, told Rimma Akhmirova of "Sobesednik” that it is far from the only one. Among the most important of the others are Rus Zalesskaya, Ingermanlandiya, Novgorodskoye Russkoye Veche, Mat-Zemlya in the Gorno-Altay, all of which "find supporters on their territories” (www.sobesednik.ru/incident/zemlya-rossiiskaya-budet-ubyvat-sibiryu).

And Igrunov suggested that the reason they are re-emerging now is that "in the country there is no common ideology, no political life, and no single set of ideals. And in the absence of political and intellectual freedom,” there is an entirely natural tendency to the splitting apart ...
