Window on Eurasia: Religion as Organized by the Kremlin Unlikely to Play an Integrative Role in Russia, Experts Say

Paul Goble

Chattanooga, March 4 – On the day the Kremlin created a Commission on Inter-National and Inter-Religious Relations, experts at a Moscow conference on the social role of religion expressed skepticism that religion by itself could play an integrative role in the multi-religious and mutli-national Russian society.

Indeed, in the words of Professor Ekaterina Elbakyan of the Moscow Academy of Labor and Social Relations, "to speak about the integrating role of religion in poly-ethnic and multi-cultural societies is not serious.” Instead, she argued, "it is necessary to seek a different basis for integration, for example, law” (www.ej.ru/?a=news&id=10434).

And another expert, Aleksandr Verkhovsky of the SOVA analytic center, said that the creation of this new commission could be valuable as religious leaders have a role to play in helping individuals and groups ...

KC: KGB And Police Thugs Again Destabilized All Over Russia

posted by eagle on as Imperialism

KGB and police thugs again destabilized all over Russia

Publication time: 11 March 2011, 19:11

Destabilizing operations against the ruling KGB junta started on Friday, March 11, with emails to Russian TV stations on Russian-occupied Chinese and Japanese territories in the Far East, including Kamchatka and Chukotka. The thugs were informed by e-mail that bombs had been placed at TV stations in at least 4 cities there. Huge hordes on 2-legged animals were sent to "find and demine them". Broadcasts were interrupted.

However, Russian censorship interfered soon and prevented the publications of further news about this type of destabilization because TV stations are considered to be strategic targets.

The destabilization of Russian university campuses continued on Friday. According the news reports, KGB and police thugs have been destabilized in at least another 40 Russian universities, from the Far East to "Russia's heartland" in Moscow and Russian-occupied Finnish Nyen (so-called "St. Peterburg").

The most important target was Moscow's Technological University named after Zio Bauman. Students and professors ...

Window on Eurasia: Russians Beyond the Urals ‘No Longer Want to Be Russians,’ Census Finds

Paul Goble

Staunton, February 28 – Russians living east of the Urals "no longer want to be Russians,” many there say, and Moscow commentators are beginning to consider the possibility that these Siberians may be a greater threat to the center’s control of that region with its enormous reserves of natural resources than the Chinese will ever represent.

Although the results of the last census have not yet been officially published, officials in Rosstat’s regional adminsitraitons have acknowledged that a significant number of residentsof "Tyumen, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Barnaul, and Yakutsk have declared themselves to be "Siberians” rather than Russians (rusrep.ru/article/2011/02/22/sibir/).

Such declarations, especially given that only eight years earlier, few if any of the ethnic Russians there declared that nationality, reflect a reality which can be seen with the unaided eye, a Russky ...

Window on Eurasia: Kremlin Fears Twitter Can Be Surrogate for Political Opposition, Soldatov Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, February 26 – The Kremlin fears that in Twitter, "the West has found a new means for advancing its interests after ‘the color revolutions,’” one in which "the weakness of the opposition is not an obstacle to regime change if Twitter technology comes to the rescue,” according to a leading independent Russian specialist on the security agencies.

In an article in yesterday’s "Yezhednevny zhurnal,” Andrey Soldatov, who heads the Agentura.ru portal, says that the Kremlin’s "hysterical” overreaction on the ability of this technology to cause political change precisely mirrors the overconfidence of some in the West about the power of this technology (www.ej.ru/?a=note&id=10845).

But it is not only the Kremlin that has overrated the role of Twitter and other social media, Soldatov continues. The Russian opposition is once again displaying the "optimism” about its ...

Jamestown Foundation: Made In Germany For Russia’s Army

Made In Germany For Russia’s Army

Publication: Eurasia Daily Monitor
February 14, 2011 03:10 PM

Kamov Ka 52 will be used on the Mistral.

Germany is joining a scramble among West-European producers of military equipment for Russian orders. NATO and the United States are silent bystanders to this growing trend, which challenges the Alliance’s defense posture and planning, as well as the US’s hitherto trend-setting role in the Alliance.

On February 9 in Moscow, the Chairman of Dusseldorf-based Rheinmetall Defense, Klaus Eberhardt, signed with Russian Defense Minister, Anatoliy Serdyukov, an agreement whereby Rheinmetall will plan and equip a troop training center in Russia. The center is to be co-located with Russia’s main artillery training range at Mulino near Nizhniy Novgorod on the Volga. It will enable Russian brigade-sized units to test combat readiness for combined-arms operations, using Rheinmetall’s state-of-the-art equipment to simulate realistic battlefield conditions and assess troop and staff performance.

In addition, Russia’s defense ...
