Window on Eurasia: Russia Will Share the USSR’s Fate if It Recognizes Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Yabloko Leader Warns
Paul Goble

Vienna, August 21 – If Moscow goes ahead and recognizes the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and even more if it incorporates South Ossetia into the Russian Federation, the Russian Federation is likely to share the fate of the Soviet Union and fall apart sometime in the future, according to the leader of Yabloko.
At a Moscow press conference earlier today, Sergei Mitrokhin said that in all cases, “Russia must start from the principle of territorial integrity. And here,” he continued, Moscow “must think not only about the participants of the current conflict but also about its very own future” (nr2.ru/moskow/192376.html).
That is because, he pointed out, “in Russia there are an enormous number of such territories which after a certain time could theoretically follow the path of South Ossetia ...

Resurgent Russia

Regarding H.D.S. Greenway's "America botches Georgia" (Views, Aug. 20): The countries of Europe have long looked to the United States for stability in foreign policy, especially in their relations with Russia.

Russia went from the giant bear on Europe's doorstep to a land of domestic strife in the immediate post-Cold War period. The country has now re-established itself under the leadership of Vladimir Putin.

Russia, however, struggles in its new role. There have been numerous examples in which Moscow's diplomacy has been too aggressive. But what can we expect when the world's remaining superpower, the United States, has misunderstood and mismanaged it diplomatic relations with almost every country or region around the world.

Greenway has highlighted what good foreign policy can achieve.

Something has been noticeably lacking since the fighting erupted in Georgia. There have been no protest marches in London or Rome condemning Russian ...

Window on Eurasia: Ukrainians Discuss How Best to Counter Russian Threat to Crimea
Paul Goble

Vienna, August 21 – Having watched Moscow’s moves in Georgia and listened to various Russians suggest that the Crimea, where Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is based, is or should be Moscow’s next target, Ukrainian politicians, diplomats, and foreign policy analysts are discussing the nature and dimensions of the Russian threat and what Kyiv should do to parry it.
In addition to Russian actions and threats, this issue has heated up in recent days because of calls by senior Ukrainian officials for Russia to begin preparing to move its fleet out of Sevastopol by or possibly even before 2017, statements that most Russian politicians have refused to take seriously and most military analysts say would be very difficult.
Today, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Volodomyr Ogryzko said that Moscow must begin thinking about moving both men and materiel from ...

CAUCASIAN KNOT / NEWS

South Ossetia urges Russia to recognize its independence

Today, the Parliament of South Ossetia has adopted an appeal to President of Russia and Federal Assembly with a request to recognize the independence of this republic.

We remind you that Abkhazia has also sent an appeal of its President and Parliament on recognition of its independence to Russia.

The text of the appeal presents the following justification: "The 17-years-long period of the independent existence of the Republic of South Ossetia has completely confirmed the viability of the country. The republic now possesses all the necessary features and attributes of a sovereign state; organization and operation of its institutes comply with the criteria of a democratic, lawful and social state based on the principles of representative democracy and separation of powers."

The document quoted by the RIA "Novosti" also remarks that, outgoing from the right of nations to self-determination, with account of the ...

Window on Eurasia: How Many Countries Would Follow Moscow in Recognizing Abkhazia and South Ossetia?
Paul Goble

Vienna, August 23 – Georgian Foreign Minister Yekaterina Tkeshelashvili says that if Moscow goes ahead and recognizes either or both Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent countries, that action will do little besides becoming an embarrassment for Russia because no other country will follow its lead.
But some commentators and officials in Moscow and elsewhere disagree, arguing either that Russian recognition alone would change the situation much as Turkey’s lone recognition of North Cyprus has or that either a few countries like Belarus and Venezuela could be counted to follow Moscow’s lead or perhaps as many as 15 to 20.
An article on the Kavkaz-uzel.ru news portal today brings together the various strands of this debate, one that is likely to heat up soon either if Moscow takes unilateral action soon or if Abkhazia ...
