Compulsory Courses on Christianity for Muslim Children in Russia
Publication time: 31 August 2006, 12:26
Compulsory courses on Orthodox Christian culture will be part of the curriculum in public schools in several regions of the country this school year, which begins Friday, September 1. The introduction of courses in Orthodox culture are just one example of the growing influence of the church.

The church's presence in the military, for example, has been growing steadily in recent years with the encouragement of the top brass. Orthodox priests already preach informally in many units, including those fighting Muslims in the North Caucasus, and the Russia's Defense Ministry is currently considering the introduction of official chaplains in the armed forces.

The Belgorod and Bryansk regions are among those introducing compulsory courses in Orthodox culture for the first time.

Pupils belonging to other religions should study Orthodoxy because it is the ...

Guler’s Rejection
Published: 5/2/2006

BY MUHARREM SARIKAYA

SABAH- US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said last week that the US was against making Russian Gazprom a partner of the Turkish-Greek pipeline on the grounds that Russia is becoming the only energy monopoly in the region and that the US is disturbed that Gazprom is using a strategic card. Rice gave a similar message to Athens before she arrived in Ankara. It’s no secret that Washington suggested to the two capitals that it would be better to be directed towards the Azerbaijani pipeline. Will Turkey go along with this? Energy and Natural Resources Minister Hilmi Guler said that it was important for Turkey to continue with this pipeline. Guler stated that the question of including Gazprom in the Turkish-Greek pipeline partnership didn’t depend on Ankara’s decision alone. He added, ‘Turkey has a clear stance: It will ...

Moldova’s Restive Province Urges Putin to Send More Russian Peacekeepers

12.05.2006

MosNews

The Anti-Blockade Coordinating Council of Non-governmental Organizations, set up in the wake of what the organizations are calling an economic blockade against Transdniestr, said it was concerned about steps being taken by the parties to the peace process, and feared they might spark a new conflict in the region, the news agency RIA-Novosti reported.

“The public is particularly concerned about the Moldovan authorities’ tendency to ignore the opinions of Transdniestr, a party to the peace talks, and to force it to make unilateral concessions, which has been supported by Ukraine, acting as a guarantor [of the peace process],” the organizations said in their appeal.

The organizations said Moldova’s political and economic moves had inflicted huge damage to the self-proclaimed republic.

In late April, Transdniestr said it had suffered losses of $112 million since Ukraine ...

PRESIDENT PUTIN IN ANNUAL MESSAGE
Russia Will Survive and Be A Weighty Factor
in the World
by Rachel Douglas

Russian President Vladimir Putin's 2006 State of the Federation message, delivered to the Federation Council on May 10, underscored the folly of trying to treat Russia as a misbehaving state or merely a source of "energy security," as Dick Cheney and others have recently done. Putin communicated tremendous determination to enhance Russia's status as a great power, moving in the direction of an economic policy shift in a way that won statements of hope from even some of his fiercest critics within Russia.

The three main areas of Putin's address—the demographic crisis, national defense, and an array of economic policy measures—were familiar to his audience from previous years' messages. In his very first State of the ...
