Georgian-Russian relations depend on conflict settlement – speaker MOSCOW. July 29 (Interfax) – Georgian parliament speaker Nino Burjanadze in a Friday interview with Interfax stated the attitude of her country to key problems in relations with Russia. "The final improvement of Georgian-Russian relations depends on Russia's constructive role in settling the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia," Burjanadze said. "We are ready for serious political compromise, but not damaging national interests, of course. We are ready to speak with Abkhazians and Ossetians to find a peaceful, fair settlement of the conflict. But as long as Tskhinvali and Sukhumi feel the support of certain Russian circles, it will be difficult to do that," she said. She also said that the future of the bilateral framework treaty also depends on Russia's stance on Georgian territorial integrity. "The Georgian parliament ratified the framework treaty with Russia back in 1995, but the State Duma refused to do the same ... >> full

Igor Savolsky: Russia wants reliable settlements in breakaway republics MOSCOW. Aug 1 (Interfax) - Igor Savolsky, the Foreign Ministry's envoy for the Commonwealth of Independent States, in a Monday interview with Interfax talked about Russia's position on several problems in relations with Moldova and Georgia. Speaking about the presence of Russian troops in Transdniestria, he said Russia will not withdraw its peacekeepers there before a comprehensive settlement is achieved. "Our peacekeepers are in the region, in the security zone, under the 1992 agreement on ending the armed conflict. Their withdrawal will be based on a totally different mechanism [from the one used to withdraw Russian troops from Georgia] and only on condition that a comprehensive settlement is achieved for the Transdniestrian conflict. If this happens, the problem of external guarantees and possible military guarantees for Transdniestria will be solved within the framework of that settlement, as well," Savolsky said. Brzezinski predicts problems for Russia 02.08.2005 - 00:59:57
U.S. political expert and former advisor to several presidents Zbigniew Brzezinski said in an interview with Russia´s Nezavisimaya http://www.ng.ru/world/2005-07-29/1_bzezhinskiy.html that whether Russia´s influence grows or declines in the next 15 years depends on whether it becomes closely bound with Europe.
But above all, it depends on Russia attaining democracy and its capability of solving its problems in the Caucasus in a civilized way, no longer evoking enmity and fear among its neighbors, Brzezinski said...
When asked what needs to be done to make Russia and the West come to an agreement on Chechnya, Mr. Brzezinski said that the problem is particular to Russia and it comes from the fact that the Russian authorities have attempted to conquer Chechnya for 200 years.
He accused the Kremlin of killing Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov for making peace proposals and thus letting terror dominate in the region.
