Agency Caucasus: Rustavi-2: Chechens Leave Abkhazia

posted by FerrasB on July, 2008 as Imperialism

Tbilisi/Agency Caucasus - While the tension between Russia and Georgia is further swollen by propoganda and manipulation in a way that affects Abkhazia the most at any rate, the Georgian news media has made a claim that the Chechen troops of the Russian Peace Forces deployed in Abkhazia have left the region as a whole body.

The Russian Peace Forces Commander gave orders for the Chechen troops deployed in Abkhazia as part of the Vostok and Zapad squad that the Russian Defense Ministry established in Chechnya to attack the Georgian police patrols, according to Rustavi-2, Georgian television station. The Chechen troops refused to obey the Commander's orders and requested that they be permitted to leave Abkhazia without anybody following them behind, or they would have to use force. A group of 90 Chechens afterwards left their posts in the Gali villages of Saberior and Mujav and disappeared in the forest.

In the Altai, Russia's far border
Marc Bennetts, 17 - 07 - 2008

Life on the Russo-Mongolian border, in the Altai Republic, is a world away from boomtown Moscow

Kosh Agach lies at the extreme southeast tip of Russia's beautifully desolate Altai Republic, some 50 kms from the Russian-Mongolian border. Russians are in the minority in Kosh Agach, with ethnic Kazakhs accounting for around three-quarters of the settlement's population. Indeed, there is not even a Russian Orthodox Church here, the sound of the call for prayer from the local mosque ...

Window on Eurasia: 90th Anniversary of Siberia’s Declaration of Independence Recalled
Paul Goble

Vienna, July 18 – Ninety years ago this week, Siberia declared its independence from Russia, an event that Moscow officials much like their Soviet predecessors have sought to minimize but one that many Siberian regionalists today celebrate as a source of pride in their enormous land and point to as a model for their own actions in the future.
In an extensive article posted on the Irkutsk-based Babr.ru news portal yesterday that has already attracted dozens of enthusiastic comments, Dmitry Tayevskiy, an analyst who both tracks and supports Siberian regionalism, describes some of the reasons why July 17 is now a special day for those who share his views (babr.ru/?pt=news&event=v1&IDE=46658).
In 1818, exactly a century before Siberia declared its independence in the wake of the collapse of the Russian state after the October revolution, Nikolai Novikov, a publisher ...
