A small Ossetian community belonging to diverse faiths has survived the tribulations of ethnic conflict.

Tina Batsiashvili is making her weekly trek on foot along a road lined with vineyards towards the village of Kitaani in eastern Georgia, where she will attend her Christian group’s regular meeting.

“As there’s no transport here, I have to walk ten kilometres to Kitaani every Wednesday,” said Batsiashvili, who goes to the village to attend Baptist Bible readings.

Meanwhile Lela, who lives in Kitaani itself and who like Batsiashvili is an ethnic Ossetian, sets aside her work and hurries to a Bible reading session, although in her case it is a meeting of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Another Kitaani resident, Zuri Khetashvili, has something to pray for, too. He has heard a television weather forecast predicting hail over Kakheti, ...

July 27, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- With a nuclear-powered icebreaker, two vast research ships, and 130 scientists, Russia's biggest-ever scientific expedition has set sail for the North Pole.

The Arctic could be a new battleground in the souring relations between Russia and the West.

One of the key figures of the expedition, which left on July 24 and should reach the North Pole in four days, is Russian polar explorer and State Duma Deputy Artur Chilingarov.

Russian scientists hope to bolster Russia's claim on 1.2 million square kilometers of Arctic territory, which Russia estimates to contain at least 10 billion tons of oil and natural-gas reserves.

Starting in the 16th century and continuing into the 19th century, Russian settlers followed Russia’s armies in the process of annexing the Caucasus. The first Russians in the region came as refugees, fleeing their own oppressors, and settled among the mountaineers, adopting local clothes (e.g. the “cherkesska”), local lifestyles, and living next to the indigenous population in a neighborly fashion [1]. Those later migrants that came in the wake of the imperial army were unwelcome and received an entirely different treatment from the highlanders.
