Georgian Base Closure Shifts Strategic Balance 30-Jun-05 The transfer of Russian military hardware from Georgia to Armenia may alter the balance of forces in the South Caucasus. By Irakly Aladashvili in Tbilisi and David Petrosian in Yerevan (CRS No. 293, 30-Jun-05) On May 30, after years of disagreements, Georgia and Russia finally agreed on a timescale for Moscow to close its two remaining military bases in Georgia. Moscow and Tbilisi are now negotiating the technical details of the pullout – and the critical issue of what will become of the significant numbers of Russian tanks in Georgia. The Russian bases at Akhalkalaki and Batumi are to close up by the end of 2008. Russia plans to transfer some of the equipment now stationed there to its military base in Gyumri in neighbouring Armenia. Although Georgian officials have hailed the pullout agreement as a landmark, some observers believe the transfer of more Russian armaments to Armenia could ... >> full

Territorial claims to Russia impermissible – Putin
03.07.2005, 16.33
SVETLOGORSK, July 3 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia was absolutely right to retract its signature under the border treaty with Estonia, as territorial claims to Russia “are absolutely impermissible,” President Vladimir Putin told a Sunday press conference following negotiations with German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and French President Jacques Chirac.

Alhazur Erbiev/Chechenpress: Malicious Demons Of Russia

Jule, 03, 2005 Malicious Demons of Russia For certain, poet Tyutchev was thinking about lofted things, when he was writing his well-known "It is impossible to understand Russia with mind". Probably, he simply opposed the "traditional spirituality" of Russia to the "rationalism" of the West, well-known to him by his work at a diplomatic service. But we shall not guess, what the well-known poet meant, for the souls of poets are the same incomprehensible for mind, as Russia . We shall say only, that there are only two ways of comprehension - reason or belief. That's why Tyutchev finished the quatrain with the line, "It is possible only to believe in Russia ". We shall agree, however, that there is some distinction between the concepts "to believe in Russia " and "to believe Russia ". And what is Russia ? It is a country, where there are many fields, woods and the rivers. ... >> full

Chechenpress: Resettlements

Jule, 03, 2005 Resettlements After the conquering of the Northern Caucasus , for strengthening of the occupied lands, Russian reached such insidiousness, which could have been planned only by the most ominous creature. The matter is that Russian began to move mountaineers, in particular Dagestanians and Chechens, from mountains to the plane. There is a question, for what? In order "to facilitate the control" of the colonial administration over the subdued people. The same idiotic actions were continued later by communists. But resettlement was not over with that. The empty mountain auls began to be occupied violently by Russian population, brought from the middle of Russia . It was already the idiocy half mixed with madness, because all this was counter to the laws of the nature. But there's nothing to be done - Russian are boundless in their idiocy. In this connection we should remember, how communists wanted to turn the rivers back, ... >> full

July 02, 2005 Putin sends for Cossacks in fight against terrorism From Julian Evans in Moscow NAPOLEON once said: “Give me 20,000 Cossacks and I will conquer the whole of Europe, and even the whole world.” Now, President Putin is enlisting the help of the Cossack ethnic minority to keep order in Russia’s volatile southern regions. The President has introduced personally to the Russian Duma a Bill that would create special Cossack security units to preserve law and order and fight terrorism. It could become law this month. About 600,000 Cossacks would be eligible to join the units, the first of which could be formed by the end of the year. The move would mean Cossacks returning, after a 90-year hiatus, to their traditional role as tough defenders of Russia’s border regions. The need for such defence was underlined yesterday as eleven soldiers were killed and more ... >> full
