The Club of Experts

On May 21st 1864 commander of the Caucasian army Grand Duke Mikhail Romanov issued a decree on complete annexation of western Caucasus and ending of the Caucasian war.

The decree noted firmness and heroism of Russian soldiers that they showed in heat to overcome self-sacrificing resistance of local population who were sheltered in hiding places of wild, inaccessible mountains.

Later it became known that one million Russian officers and soldiers were killed in the Russian-Caucasian war. Despite the fact that thousands of them were awarded honours, some of them posthumously nothing was said about those hundreds of thousands of people killed and exiled from their homeland. And one million Russian soldiers were sacrificed to bring misfortunes on the heads of these people.

Probably Mikhail Romanov could not have imagined that the Caucasian war that he declared finished ...

For Moscow's Ethnic Minorities, A Fresh Sense Of Fear

by Brian Whitmore

In the aftermath of this week's twin suicide bombings in Moscow, Uzlipat Gebekova is very careful about what she wears in public.

A resident of Makhachkala, the capital of the North Caucasus republic of Daghestan, Gebekova is living in Moscow temporarily while she studies jewelry-making. And she doesn't want anybody associating her with the two female suicide bombers who wore long black skirts to cover the explosive belts they detonated on the Moscow Metro, killing 39 Monday-morning commuters.

"The situation is very dangerous for us," Gebekova says. "Wearing a head scarf is a risk. I think even wearing a skirt would be dangerous. It's best just to wear trousers. To come here [to Moscow] now -- whether for business, education, or medical treatment -- is dangerous."

Life in Moscow is never easy for ethnic minorities, particularly people from the Caucasus. They are ...

Window on Eurasia: Russians, Ukrainians ‘Not Simply Fraternal Peoples But a Single People,’ Russian Ambassador in Kyiv Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, June 15 – Russia’s ambassador in Kyiv says Russians and Ukrainians "are not simply fraternal peoples – [they] are a single people. With their own nuances, with their own special features but a single people,” a statement that reflects both Moscow’s happiness with the new Ukrainian leadership and longstanding Russian views on Slavic ethnogenesis.
In an interview in "Izvestiya v Ukraine” yesterday, Ambassador Mikhail Zurabov said that he has reached that conclusion on the basis of a long study of the demographic problems of Russia and particularly the famine in the early 1930s which resulted in the deaths of so many Russians and Ukrainians (izvestia.com.ua/?/articles/2010/06/14/163217-19).
Asked whether the election of Viktor Yanukovich had put an end to "discussions on historical questions,” Zurabov said that "everything that concerns the assessment of ...

Window on Eurasia: Moscow City to Codify ‘Unwritten Rules’ for Non-Russians in Russian Capital

Paul Goble

Vienna, June 16 – A senior Moscow Duma official says that his city plans to "work up a collection of rules” which will help those coming to Moscow to fit in with the style of life of the Russian city and know from a pamphlet to be published outlining "what is acceptable and what isn’t” for all residents in what he described as an "ethnic Russian” city.
In an interview published in today’s "Rossiiskaya gazeta,” Mikhail Solomentsev, the chairman the city Duma’s committee on inter-regional ties and nationality policy, said that such a set of rules will help unite newcomers with longtime residents by stressing what the two have in common rather than what separates them (www.rg.ru/2010/06/16/solomencev.html).
But his comments about this plan make it clear that he believes it is migrant workers and non-Russians ...

Lavrov: Russia’s S.Ossetia, Abkhaz Decision Irreversible
Civil Georgia, Tbilisi / 11 Jun.'10 / 20:38

The issue of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is already solved "finally and irreversibly” not only for Russia, but for "other serious countries” as well, Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, said.

"They simply can not acknowledge because of political correctness or some other political reasons,” Lavrov said in an interview with the Russian daily, Kommersant, published on June 11.

"I have said numerously that it was not our choice and all the complaints should be addressed to Mikheil Saakashvili, who trampled the territorial integrity of Georgia.”

Asked what did he mean when he said recently that immediately after the August, 2008, Georgia still had a chance to maintain possibility for restoration of territorial integrity, Lavrov responded: "When the purpose of the operation aimed at suppressing the aggression was fulfilled and the Russian President ordered to suspend a military operation, the Medvedev-Sarkozy ...
