Wednesday,June 18, 2008 Window on Eurasia: Russians’ Views on Ethnic Relations Said to Reflect Their Feelings about Themselves Paul Goble Vienna, June 18 – A poll released this week shows that Russians believe inter-ethnic relations are improving in their country, a view that one regional politician suggests says less about objective reality in the Russian Federation than it does about how much better Russians feel about themselves as a nation. Yesterday, the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM), a polling agency known for its close ties to the government, released figures showing that the share of Russians who believe that inter-ethnic tensions are intensifying has fallen from 41 percent in 2005 to 24 percent now (wciom.ru/novosti/press-vypuski/press-vypusk/single/10274.html). Over the same period, VTsIOM reported, the share of those who felt that relations among the country’s ethnic groups had become better rose from 17 percent to 27 percent, while the fraction saying these interactions had ... >> full

19-Jun-08 Georgia, Russia in New Abkhazia Standoff Tbilisi ups the ante on Russian peacekeeping presence. By Irakli Lagvilava in Zugdidi (CRS No. 449, 19-Jun-08) Georgian security forces have again had a confrontation with Russian peacekeepers on the border with Abkhazia, leading to a tense telephone conversation between the two presidents. The detention of a Russian army truck by Georgian police appears to be part of a war of nerves over the disputed territory of Abkhazia. Tbilisi claims the Russians are engaged in annexing Abkhazia and insists their peacekeeping forces must be disbanded, while Moscow says the troops are operating under an international mandate and are providing vital security for the Abkhaz. Georgian television channels showed pictures of local police stopping a truck carrying Russian peacekeepers near the village of Rukhi on June 17. They reported that it was carrying weapons illegally through the conflict zone, close to the administrative border with Abkhazia. The four soldiers on board the ... >> full

Bashkirian president: Moscow sees not everything from above
18.6.2008
The president of Bashkiria Murtaza Rahimov supports the statement of his Tatar colleague Mintimer Shaimiev about necessity of returning to the elections of the heads of the Russian regions. As IА REGNUM correspondent reported, in the conversation with the journalists on June 18 Rahimov declared that he agreed with Shaimiev as a whole.
"It is necessary to return to the elections of the heads of the subjects. Russia is a federal democratic state, but we have already lost everything. To the management of this or that area new people come. I consider that the people should be from among the locals, who know conditions of life and what happens at places. In this connection there should be elections. All persons are nominated from above, as though Moscow sees everything and knows what occurs. So I agree with Shaimiev", - Rahimov declared.
