Monday, June 16, 2008 Russia: Moscow Looks To Expand Military Presence In Central Asia By Farangis Najibullah Tajikistan / Russia – Military / security / terrorism – Russian tanks (201st division) pictured during joint exercises with the Tajik military, 18 October 2002. (Size: 220x155) Russian tanks in joint exercises in Tajikistan (ITAR-TASS) Some events this month indicate Russia is trying to boost its military presence in energy-rich Central Asia, and the region's governments seem content to expand their military ties with Russia. Earlier this month, Russian media quoted Russian Air Force commander Colonel General Aleksandr Zelin as saying Moscow will deploy more personnel and equipment -- including more aircraft -- to its air base in Kant, outside the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek. And last week, the Russian State Duma, the lower house of parliament, ratified an agreement with Tajikistan on the mutual use of military forces. The document was first signed in November 2006 and has already been approved ... >> full

USMAN FERZAULI: THERE ARE NO RUSSIAN COLONISERS IN CHECHNYA ANY MORE, BUT THE FACT OF THE OCCUPATION REMAINS... June, 16th 2008 The interview was conducted by Mayerbek Taramov for the SNA CHECHENPRESS, 2/06/08. - Majerbek Taramov: Usman, you took part in the conference on Chechnya in London. What is your impression of the meeting? U. Ferzauli: An objective impression. Indeed, it would have been naive to expect some political breakthrough resulting from the conference. Yet there was a tremendous interest in the political events in Russia, especially, in the dynamics of the development or, rather, decline in democratic values (if one could speak of democratic values) in the country, in its domestic and foreign policies, on the issue of human rights, negative consequences of the power vertical, the violent suppression of political dissent, the Law on Extremism as an unlimited opportunity for the official institutions to influence the media etc… These questions were ... >> full

Russian becomes enemy language in former USSR 11.06.2008 Source: Pravda.Ru The Russian administration has decided to do everything possible to make Russian the official language in all countries of the former USSR (currently known as the Commonwealth of Independent States, CIS). However, the leaders of some of those countries are not eager to follow Russia at this point. The idea to make the Russian language the official language on the post-Soviet space is not new. Russia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry started working on the subject in 2003. “If a country decides to acknowledge Russia its official language then it is up to this country to elaborate necessary mechanisms for it,” a spokesman for the Institute of the CIS, Vladimir Zharikhin told Pravda.ru. The specialist urged not to politicize the issue of the Russian language in post-Soviet states. “This is a humanitarian mission, first and foremost. Studying the Russian language and culture ... >> full

CAUCASIAN KNOT / NEWS 17/6/2008 Russian MFA: withdrawal of peacemakers from Abkhazia will aggravate situation Andrei Nesterenko, and official spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Russia, has stated today that phasing out the peacemaking operation in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone will entail aggravation of the situation in the region. "While contemplating on stopping the peacemaking operation in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone, the leadership of Georgia should realize that this reckless step will inevitably cause an aggravation of the situation, 'defrosting' of the conflict, fraught with the situation all over the Caucasus getting out of control," Mr Nesterenko has emphasized. "In such case, the responsibility will remain with Tbilisi authorities and those who keep their eyes shut on the danger of the course they pursue," the ITAR-TASS quotes him as saying. Temur Yakobashvili, State Minister for Reintegration Matters of Georgia, believes that all the debates on amending the peacemaking mandate should be held ... >> full
