posted by FerrasB on June, 2008 as Imperialism

Russian railway troops to rebuilt the railway in Abkhazia

A battalion of railway troops of Russia has arrived to Abkhazia with a mission to repair the railway section running from Sukhum to Ochamchira in the east of Abkhazia. The battalion is equipped with all the necessary machinery for the aim of the mission.

It is also expected that a group of specialists from the Open Joint-Stock Company (OJSC) "Russian Railways" will come to the Republic and start repairing the Kodor and Mokvsk railway bridges in the Ochamchira Districts, which are in disrepair condition. Guram Gubaz, head of the Department of the Abkhazian Railway, has informed the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent about it.

"It's all aimed at improving the condition of the railway, which is vital for economic development of Abkhazia and for exporting the inert materials needed for construction of the Olympic objects in Sochi, in particular" Mr Gubaz has noted.

Caucasian Knot: USA & NATO Are Concerned With Deployment Of Russia's Railway...

USA and NATO are concerned with deployment of Russia's railway battalion in Abkhazia

The USA and NATO are worried about the deployment of the railway troops of the Russian Ministry of Defence in Abkhazia, and think that such actions will not lead to improvement of Russian-Georgian relations.

"A question arises: if the territorial integrity of Georgia is recognized, how can another country send its troops there? I don't think any of NATO members would like such steps here. I doubt they will help to settle the problems and improve the atmosphere," said a source from the NATO headquarters in Brussels.

NATO emphasizes that, according to media, the troops in question are not peacemakers but regular servicemen of the Russian railway troops, the RIA "Novosti" reports.

The May 31 statement of the US Department of State runs that the States are alarmed with the news of the Ministry of Defence of Russia ...

Russia for Racists

By Susanne Scholl
Project Syndicate

MOSCOW -In Russia, if you have dark hair and a slightly swarthy complexion, you are likely to be in danger. Sadly, Russia's leaders have tolerated, if not encouraged, fear of foreigners and assaults on those whose appearance differs from the average Russian.

In a residential area of Moscow, a group of adolescents, many with shaven heads and wearing combat boots, marches and shouts Russian nationalist slogans. When they come across three Azerbaijani boys, they don't hesitate.

Soon, one of the boys ةز only 13 years old ةز lies severely injured; he will have to be hospitalized. The other two are injured as well. The perpetrators are never caught.

Bashir Osiev, 24, an Ingushetian-born clerk in a Moscow bank, is assaulted by a group of skinheads while walking home with a friend. The friend is badly wounded but manages to escape; Osiev dies after ...

Window on Eurasia: Could Gagauzia Replace Transdniestria as Moscow’s Lever of Choice in Moldova?
Paul Goble

Vienna, June 5 – Disappointed that Moscow has said that Transdniestria should be part of a federated Moldova, many Tiraspol politicians are turning to the European Union in hopes that Brussels, given its commitment to regional autonomy and minority rights, will help them achieve the international recognition the Russian government is not ready to extend.
And while Transdniestria’s moves in this direction are strictly limited and while the EU is unlikely to go as far as many in Tiraspol would like, this new “multi-vector” policy by that breakaway republic has led some in the Russian capital to consider stepping up its support for the Gagauz, a Turkic-speaking minority in southeastern Moldova.
Whether these reflections will cause a change in Russian policy remains to be seen, but the very fact that some Russian officials are considering ...
