Valerie Brinih: their true purpose is to grasp valuable territories of Sochi national park
26.6.2007

In Russia, where there are great northern territories (suitable for use under any kinds of winter sports) to declare as an applicant for the winter Olympic Games the most southern city of the country – Sochi - is invalid. As the question is about the unique place with a plenty of especially protected natural zones. Such opinion was stated in the interview to “Caucasian unit” correspondent by the head of Maykop town public organization of the All-Russia society of nature protection, member of the council of the Ecological watch across Northern Caucasus Valerie Brinih.

As he said, Russia has rather enough places that could considerably more seriously apply for the winter Olympic Games-2014, and "the true purpose of the attacks Sochi with the flag of Olympiad is simply ...

(RFE/RL)
June 28, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- With the December deadline for signing a new gas-supply contract approaching, Ukrainian and Russian officials have been holding preliminary meetings to sound each other out.

As in past negotiations, the issue is not only the price Ukraine will pay for gas in 2008, or how much Russia will pay Ukraine in transit fees -- the major question is about who will control the vital Ukrainian gas-pipeline network to Europe, an asset that Russia's state-owned gas monopoly, Gazprom, has persistently sought to obtain.

Deputy Director of the National Museum of Adygea: Sochi needs archaeological examination

Ruslan Achmiz, Deputy Director of the National Museum of Adygea, asserted in his conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that, apart from the ecological examination, the Sochi Olympic construction sites also need a mandatory archaeological examination.

He explained that the North Caucasus and the sites in question, in particular, have always been densely populated. Therefore, a question arises, R. Achmiz said, whether this sort of examination has ever been conducted. And in case it has been conducted, why the local public knows nothing about it.

We remind you that ecologists of North Caucasus are categorically against the choice of Sochi as the venue of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. In Adygea the ecologists were supported by such public organizations like the "Union of Slavs of Adygea," the Republic's CPRF (Communist ...

The RF Constitutional Court upholds the decision not to give the militants' bodies out

Today, the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation (RF) has announced its decision on the complaint of the parents of militants Kunak Guziev and Elena Karmova who perished in Kabardino-Balkaria. The Court has upheld the provision of the Law "On Burial and Funeral Business" regarding the non-giving out of terrorists' bodies, however, the Court has recognized it illegal to bury the bodies of such persons prior to decision of the court to recognize them guilty of terrorism or not.

We remind you that the Office of Public Prosecutor of the South Federal District (SFD) stopped the criminal cases in relation to the persons who perished in October 2005 in Nalchik because of their death. When making the corresponding decisions, the investigation noted that the decisions could be ...
