As Montenegro officially declared independence this weekend, accepting the world's welcome into the community of nations, a handful of obscure "statelets" are demanding the same opportunity to choose their own destinies. In the latest example, Transdniestria, a Russian-speaking enclave that won de facto independence in the early 1990s, declared last week that it will hold a Montenegro-style referendum in September as part of its campaign for statehood. Experts fear that many "frozen conflicts" around the world - in which a territory has gained de facto independence through war but failed to win international recognition - could reignite as ethnic minorities demand the same right to ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/10/2006 6:43 PM Ukraine accuses Russia of inciting new 'Crimean war' Publication time: 8 June 2006, 18:35 Ukraine has accused Russia of stirring up anti-US and anti-Nato protests on the Crimean peninsula where Russia's Black Sea Fleet is based. The allegation - made by the Our Ukraine party of President Viktor Yushchenko - follows a week of anti-Nato protests in Crimea that appear to have caught the government unawares. Emotions are running high ahead of a multinational military exercise on the peninsula, called Sea Breeze, due to begin in July. Coaches carrying US Marine reservists have been stoned, the Ukrainian Socialists have demanded the resignation of the Defence Minister, Anatoliy Hrytsenko, and Russian MPs have called for Crimea to be taken away from Ukraine and incorporated into Russia. The dispute comes as Ukrainian politicians are struggling to form a coalition government more than two months after the election that confirmed the ... >> full

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/20/2006 9:30 PM June, 20, 2006 The Difficult Way to Freedom By Mikhas Kukobaka First of all, I want to express sincere condolences about the death of Abdu-Halim Sadulaev, President of Chechen Republic. His assassination is yet another crime of Russian imperialism against the Chechen nation. The way to freedom is difficult. Usually, any nation which defends its right for its own statehood, language, culture and traditions, suffers a lot. But in the last hundred years, the Chechen nation suffered greater losses than any other European nation. This happened because of boundless hunger for power of the rulers of Russian empire: Stalin, Yeltsin, and now Putin. Yet, the age of Empires is passing away. Gone are Ottoman, British, French, Spanish and other, smaller, empires. Today, the people of their former metropolises have overcome their imperial ambitions. They steadily follow the pass of cultural and technological progress. In spite of all ... >> full

Chechen figure exploits alliance with the Kremlin

From: MSN NicknameEagle_wng (Original Message) Sent: 6/25/2006 8:46 AM Article published Sunday, June 25, 2006 Chechen figure exploits alliance with the Kremlin The Kremlin is trumpeting a purported big victory over terrorism. The occasion was provided by Ramzan Kadyrov — a Kremlin-installed Chechen prime minister whose private army rules by terror — kidnappings, hostage taking, torture, and murder of anyone suspected of disloyalty to Mr. Kadyrov. This time his troops killed what Mr. Kadyrov, 29, argues is a legitimate target — Abdul-Khalim Sadulayev, Chechnya’s secessionist president accused by Mr. Kadyrov of planning a terrorist act at the upcoming G-8 summit in St. Petersburg. The assassination, however, aggravates the situation in Chechnya and the neighboring provinces of southern Russia already grave enough to threaten the country’s territorial integrity. First, the slain president was more moderate than his successor Doku Umarov, a warlord the Russian government has accused of being involved in Russia’s worst hostage crises that killed hundreds. Second, ... >> full

Margelov criticises Estonian version of border treaty 20.06.2005, 15.41 STRASBOURG, June 20 (Itar-Tass) - The Russian-Estonian border treaty in the form, in which it was ratified by the Estonian parliament, will hardly suit Russia, said Mikhail Margelov, head of the Federation Council committee for international affairs. Estonian legislators did not mention directly the “annexation” or “occupation” of their country by the USSR in the final text of the document, but they included in the preamble of the document references to the legal acts, in which this is stated openly. “Although the two parties proceeded from the border line, set in 1944, during the drafting of the treaty, Estonia again mentions the 1918 border line in the final document, thus creating conditions for laying territorial and other claims to us,” Margelov stressed. “If Russia decides after additional examination, that the amendments, made to the text of the treaty by Estonia, are unacceptable for it, the treaty ... >> full
