A military aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin says 60 percent of the country's armed forces will be modernized by 2012.

Alexander Burutin told the news agency RIA Novotsi on Wednesday Russia's air force, army and other forces will be updated with the latest military technologies and equipment over the next seven years.

An estimated 20 to 30 percent of Russia's armed forces are currently using new military equipment.

Gen. Vladimir Mikhailov, commander in chief of the Russian air forces, told journalists plane inventories were sufficient but that new warplanes are expected.

He said the new Su-34 fighter bomber and Su-27SM air superiority fighter would enter military inventories soon.

Japan Asks Russia to Return 6 Crewmen and Seized Fishing Boat

June 9 (Bloomberg) -- Japan today asked Russia to return six Japanese crewmen and their fishing vessel seized in the Sea of Okhotsk yesterday, the Foreign Ministry said.

Russian border guards yesterday stopped and searched the 30- ton Mantai Maru No. 52 in the Sea of Okhotsk, 120 kilometers (about 75 miles) off Cape Notori, in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Russia said the boat entered Russia's exclusive economic zone before returning to Japanese waters where it was seized, said an official in the press department of Japan's foreign ministry who asked not to be identified.

The vessel was stopped near four islands that Soviet forces seized at the close of World War II. Japan wants them back, and the dispute has blocked signing of a peace treaty that would formally end hostilities between the two countries and open the way for ...

Over 100 border guards hospitalized due to food poisoning

MOSCOW/YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK. June 9 (Interfax) - As many as 117 border guards serving in a military unit on Russia's Kuril Islands were hospitalized with food poisoning on Wednesday, the military prosecutor's office of the Russian border service told Interfax on Thursday.

"The lives of the border guards are out of danger now. Many of them have already returned to service. The unit's combat preparedness was not affected," a prosecutor's office spokesman said.

09/06/2005 13:42 ST. PETERBURG/TALLINN/HELSINKI, June 9 (RIA Novosti). Russian, Estonian, and Finnish border guards will hold a joint antiterrorist and rescue exercise in Primorsk, Gulf of Finland, the Russian local border guard authority told RIA Novosti today.

The border guard services will share operational experience and test coherence and liaison procedures in antiterrorist and rescue operations, said the press service of the Northwestern Federal District's regional border guard authority of the Russian Federal Security Service.

Russia is presenting a powerful team of several corvettes, patrol craft, FSB and Emergency Situations Ministry's helicopters, an anti-submarine warfare (ASW) craft, local army personnel, St. Petersburg and Leningrad Region FSB special teams, and Primorsk specialized personnel.
