Window on Eurasia: Moscow Must Reward Loyal Muslims, Punish Disloyal Ones, Silantyev Says

Paul Goble

Baku, May 23 – The Russian government should actively support, including financially, “traditional” Muslim leaders who are loyal to the Kremlin and punish all the others, according to Roman Silant’yev, a specialist on Islam with close ties to the leadership of the Russian Orthodox Church and the country’s political elite.
At a press conference called to present his new encyclopedia, “Islam in Contemporary Russia,” Silant’yev called for the government to take a more active role in the country’s growing Muslim community, one that would integrate Islam into the political establishment in much the same way the Orthodox Church is (www.blagovest-info.ru/index.php?ss=2&s=4&id=20642).
Arguing that for Russian Islam, the period between 1789 and 1917 was its “golden age,” Silant’yev suggested that the current Russian government could draw on that experience both to promote its own goals of civil peace ...

Publication time: 23 May 2008, 17:47
Georgia's Minister for Reintegration of Separatist Territories, Temur Yakobashvili commented on situation with the attacks on Georgian buses on the day of parliamentary election. In his interview to Russian newspaper "Vremya Novostey", he stated that "Russia should leave Abkhazia alone and withdraw its peacekeepers/occupiers".

"Unresolved conflict in the Caucasus threatens to frustrate the Sochi Olympics", Georgia's minister warned.

"This is terrorism", Yakobashvili said when commenting on the bus attack. "An attack on civilians is called terrorism. The objective is to frighten the civilian population, especially to make people not go to Georgian elections. That is, the existing peacekeeping formats cannot ensure the smooth movement of people living in the Gali District.  All these so-called peacekeepers and general security scheme, existing in the region, should be reviewed ".

"Now we can see, for example, the so-called increase of Russian peacekeepers, which are in fact ...

NATO considers Russia as 'occupation force' and supports Georgia
Publication time: 28 May 2008, 20:18
NATO took Tbilisi's side in the scandal with downing of drone. Previously, Georgians were supported by the UN. Senior leadership of North Atlantic treaty calls Russian troops in Abkhazia "occupation forces" and promises to take Tbilisi into Alliance rapidly. UN, in turn, accuses Russia of violating the Moscow Agreement.

Earlier, British parliamentarian and vice-president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, Bruce George at the Berlin meeting of Parliamentary Assembly had severely criticized Russia. His position is that Moscow was pushing for the destabilization in Georgia. And it poses a threat to the entire region.

The momentum for a diplomatic attack of Tbilisi on Moscow was became the conclusions of experts, who under the aegis of UN Observer Mission in Georgia studied the incident on 20 April in the skies over Abkhazia and considered that it was a Russian fighter shot ...

Poland to help Georgia repel Russian aggression

The UN Mission's report dated May 26, 2008 says that UN experts in the zone of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict have come to the conclusion that the Georgian unmanned spy plane (BLA) was shot down on April 20 by a Russian warplane, -- News Georgia reports.

Earlier Georgia was accusing Russia of that fact, but Moscow was flatly denying such allegations.

According to the UN Mission report, the data of the radar control show that after the Georgian BLA drone was destroyed over the territory of Abkhazia, the plane that shot it down had headed towards the Russian airspace.

The complete text of the UN Mission report on the incident is published on www.unomig.org  website.

Commanding Officer of Russian Air Force, Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin was claiming that the aircraft of Russia's Air Force allegedly did not take any part in the downing of ...

Serious division of the Arctic begins

26/05/2008 19:37 MOSCOW. (RIA Novosti political commentator Andrei Fedyashin) - On May 27-29 Denmark plays host to its main Arctic neighbors at the Arctic Ocean Conference held in the small town of Illulissat in Greenland. In addition to the hosts (Denmark/Greenland), it will be attended by the foreign ministers of Russia, the United States, Canada and Norway.

The declared theme of the meeting is "strengthening cooperation among Arctic states in managing the Arctic Ocean." The Danes hope that the conference will adopt a "political declaration... on the main problems of the future orientation and management of the ocean."

In reality, before strengthening cooperation we need to legally define the interests of the Arctic Ocean states. The ministerial meeting in Illulissat is the first serious step in this direction. Leaving diplomatic niceties aside, it will be about dividing up the Arctic, or rather, the continental shelf.

There is ...
