May 7, 2007 -- The Ukrainian Emergency Situations Ministry says an explosion has ruptured one of Ukraine's main pipelines pumping Russian natural gas to Europe.

A ministry spokesman said the blast today destroyed a 30-meter section of the pipeline and stopped the flow of gas to Europe.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion. No casualties have been reported.

Putin in veiled attack on Estonia
Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned people
who "desecrate memorials to war heroes", accusing them
of sowing discord between nations.

Russia marks victory in World War
II a day later than Western Europe

His comments at a Victory Day commemoration in Red Square appeared to be a continuation of a war of words with Estonia.

Estonia last month moved a Soviet-era war memorial out of the city-centre of the capital, Tallinn.

The move angered ethnic Russians in Estonia, and led to violent clashes.

One person was killed in the disturbances, and hundreds arrested.

Russian boycott of Estonian goods was “doomed to fail” for many of Baltic county’s have a EU label, Estonia's prime minister said Thursday.

Andrus Ansip's comments came as Western support solidified behind the Baltic country, which remained at loggerheads with Moscow over the removal of a Soviet monument from downtown Tallinn.

Russian politicians and businessmen have called for a boycott of Estonian goods, and there have been reports of Russian grocery stores pulling Estonian-made products from their shelves.

"The call to boycott Estonian goods in Russia is doomed to fail as the goods sold there do not carry the label 'Made in Estonia,"' Andrus Ansip told reporters. Many goods produced in the 27-nation bloc have a "Made in the EU" label, he added.

Putin arrives in Kazakhstan May 9, and is scheduled to attend a summit with Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev in Turkmenistan from May 10-12 before returning to Kazakhstan.

Putin has not selected those two countries by chance. They are the richest in natural resources among the Central Asian republics, and they are both exposed to increasing influence from the West and China.

Senior regional analyst Yuri Fedorov, of the London-based think tank Chatham House, notes that Turkmenistan has ...
