EU: European Officials Intervene In Russian-Estonian Dispute

BRUSSELS, May 2, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- The European Union today called on Russia to guarantee the safety of Estonian diplomats on its territory as the two countries continued their standoff over a contentious Soviet war monument.




The Estonian Embassy in Moscow has been surrounded by demonstrators since a monument to Soviet soldiers who fought in World War II was removed from its central location in the Estonian capital Tallinn on April 27.
 
Meeting Sought

Today, a delegation of EU ambassadors sought a meeting with Russian authorities to make a formal protest after demonstrations continued in Moscow.

The demonstrations led the embassy to close its consular section today due to safety concerns. ...

Pro-Kremlin demonstrators chasing after Estonian Ambassador Marina Kaljurand's car as she leaves a news conference in central Moscow on Wednesday.

About 40 pro-Kremlin youth activists stormed the offices of the Argumenty i Fakty newspaper Wednesday to break up a news conference called by Estonian Ambassador Marina Kaljurand and demand that Estonia apologize for its relocation of a Soviet monument in Tallinn.

It was the most volatile confrontation in Moscow in the weeklong protests over the monument. Estonia accused Russia of failing to protect the safety of foreign diplomats, while the European Commission urged Russia to respect diplomatic conventions. In a related incident, the Swedish ambassador to Russia complained to the Foreign Ministry over harassment by protesters near the Estonian Embassy.

UKRAINE, Sevastopol, Crimea (Our Correspondent) Members of the organization "Student Brotherhood" placed a Ukrainian national flag above the "Khersonesky" lighthouse. Russian marines pulled the flag down and threw it on the ground. A brawl started between the soldiers and the students.

The marines guarding "Khersonesky" lighthouse, refer to it as "Russian territory". Using physical force, the infantrymen sent participants in the action and journalists away from the lighthouse. The members of "Student Brotherhood" believe Ukraine leased the lighthouse to the Black Sea fleet of Russia; therefore the Ukrainian flag must hang over it. According to officers of the Black Sea fleet, the students accomplished nothing useful by their action.
