Window on Eurasia: Romanticism, Nostalgia Behind Russian Interest in Soviet Symbols

Paul Goble

Baku, April 26 – The current fashion in Russia for displaying Soviet symbols reflects romanticism of young people who do not see any remarkable leaders today and nostalgia among older age groups whose members have been disappointed by what has happened in their country since the end of communism, according to a leading Russian social psychologist.
The widespread and growing interest in “the outstanding personalities of the 20th century” however odious some of them may have been, Mikhail Rozhansky of the Center for Independent Social Research and Education told Argumenty i faky v Vostochnoy Sibiri this week, is easily explained (www.aifvs.ru/nomer/570/16-2.shtml).
Whether one is in Irkutsk, Moscow or some Western city, he said, “at the present moment in international politics there are practically no bright leaders” who appear capable of taking humanity in a new direction. And young ...

posted by FerrasB on as Imperialism

Sukhum/Tbilisi-Agency Caucasus - A recent statement from Valeri Kenyakin, Russian Foreign Ministry's special envoy for relations with the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), has come as the reiteration of claims that Georgia might soon launch a war on Abkhazia.

"Russia is worried that Georgia might soon launch a military operation against Abkhazia," said Kenyakin in his statement.

A possible Georgian military operation would definitely not remain unanswered, added Kenyakin: "Although it is likely that Georgia may attempt to launch a military operation against Abkhazia soon, Russia will do its best in any case and defend its citizens in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Russia will definitely not leave its citizens in these countries alone."

Tbilisi concerned with its safety after Russia sends additional troops

Tbilisi - The Georgian administration expressed concerns for its safety as Russia has made a decision to send additional peacekeeping troops off to the borders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia after Georgia began increasing its military instruments there.

While the Georgian Foreign Ministry said in a written statement that Russia's decision to send additional troops constituted a threat of attack, Givri Tardamadze, who chairs the Georgian Parliament's Committee of Defense, expressed a resolved will to answer back if it comes out.

"Russia's decision cannot be tolerated, because it cannot increase its military presence there," said the spokesman for Georgia's Interior Ministry, and argued that Georgia did not possess any military instruments on its side: "It is not Georgia but Russia that is acting provocatively, because it deploys additional troops."

While Russian sources say that a group of 1500 Georgian troops and police officers are ...

Russian journalist's film "Plan Kavkaz" caused bewilderment in Azerbaijan

The investigation made by Anton Vernitskiy, journalist of Channel One, in his film "Plan Kavkaz", shown on April 22 and dedicated to the attempts in early 1990s of external forces, including Baku and Ankara, to separate Chechnya from Russia, has caused bewilderment in Azerbaijan.

The ORT journalist reminds the viewers about the events in the 1990s, when after collapse of the USSR Chechen leaders got a chance to appeal for help to foreign special agencies in implementing their mercenary separatist plans. The journalist's investigation asserts that Azerbaijan was then a serious player, and allegedly the then presidents of country Abulfaz Elchibey and Geidar Aliev rendered assistance to Chechen separatists.

Khazar Ibragim, head of the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, has stated in his comments on Anton Vernitskiy's assertions that Azerbaijan had never interfered and does not ...

Mironov: Russia may use force to defend its compatriots in South Ossetia and Abkhazia

If necessary, Russia will defend its citizens living in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Sergey Mironov, Speaker of the Federation Council, has stated today, having noted that Russia has also the right to apply force, if required.

"Our statement about possible application of force in Abkhazia and South Ossetia proceeds from the fact that many Russian citizens live there. Should their lives be in danger, or in case of other threats against our citizens, Russia shall have the right to use force to defend them," the "Interfax" quotes Mironov as saying during his working trip to Penza.

We remind you that on April 25 Valery Kenyaikin, Special Representative of Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for relations with the CIS member countries, stated that should the Georgian party unfold a military conflict in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Russia ...
