Wednesday, April 16, 2008 Window on Eurasia: Kremlin Continues to Exploit Russians’ Fears, Real and Media Induced Paul Goble Vienna, April 16 – Like its Soviet and tsarist predecessors, the current Russian government exploits the fears – both real and imaginary – that many Russians have in order to manipulate and mobilize them to do what the Kremlin wants, according to a prominent Moscow psychologist. In an article posted on Pravda.ru today, Natalya Savitskaya said that urban Russians, like people living in major cities in other countries, are increasingly fearful of the environment around them not only for entirely good reasons but also for entirely imaginary ones (http://www.pravda.ru/society/263816-paranoja-0). Urban Russians, she said, have to confront a variety of very real problems, including possible attacks by criminal elements in the metro and other tensions arising from living in such close proximity to so many people. But she suggested that many of them fear things without any ... >> full

Tuesday, April 15, 2008 Window on Eurasia: Ethnic Divisions Intensifying Among Muslims in Russian Cities Paul Goble Vienna, April 15 – Ethnic tensions among the Islamic communities in Russian cities are intensifying as new arrivals find they have little choice but to attend mosques still controlled by members of a nationality other than their own, a trend that ever more Muslim leaders there appear to be worried about. Like believers everywhere, Muslims in the Russian Federation have always preferred to attend mosques whose parishioners and mullahs are of the same nationality as their own. Indeed, even in Derbent, which was islamicized in the 8th century, there have long been “national” mosques. Indeed, even the Arab Muslim conquerors who brought Islam to that Daghestani city quickly divided themselves into ethnic specific enclaves and mosques. According to Ruslan Kurbanov, that city had from the beginning Palestinian, Cairene, and Mosul quarters (http://www.islam.ru/pressclub/histori/derag/). But three factors help to explain why ... >> full

RIA Novosti UN Security Council to discuss Russian-Georgian dispute 22/04/2008 09:37 UNITED NATIONS, April 22 (RIA Novosti) - The United Nations Security Council has scheduled a meeting for Wednesday on Georgia's request, to discuss accusations of Russian aggression in Abkhazia, a breakaway Georgian region. FEC: We Support Unconditionally The Independence Of Abkhazia And South Ossetia

We support unconditionally the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia For many centuries now it is the homeland of Abkhazians and various other people, living together in brotherliness and peace: ABKHAZIA. Until today ABKHAZIA defended its independency in spite of political manipulations – and this will continue in future years. On one hand nations who never in their history were able to build or to found their own state, suddenly are recognized as states and their independence is acknowledged. On the other hand the declarations of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia disappeared like nothing. This is a double-cross and as a matter of fact is violation of human rights. The Abkhazian people are going to be the political sacrifice of more developed countries. The democratic world is urged to resist this double-cross. We – the Federation of European Circassians – harshly criticize the unequal treatment and we insist on the ... >> full
