Agency Caucasus: Putin Writes Letter Of Warrant To Abkhazia And South Ossetia

posted by FerrasB on April, 2008 as Imperialism

Moscow/Sukhum - Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has withheld so far his positive response to calls of recognition from Abkhazia and South Ossetia, even supported by the Duma itself too, wrote a letter of security warrant to the leaders of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Both republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are disappointed that Moscow, the administrative capital of Russia, has not signaled willingness for its future recognition of them in retaliation for Kosovo. Putin, however, wrote to the leaders of both countries a letter in which he said that he was not indifferent to trouble facing Abkhazia and South Ossetia, whose populations are comprised of largely Russians.

"It is not possible that Moscow cannot be aware of the tactics employed by the administration of Georgia to damage regional stability and its use of force and threats," Putin wrote in his letter, Russian Foreign Ministry officials said. "Pressuring Abkhazia and South ...

MediaMonitors: "Not You! You!!!"

"Not You! You!!!"
by Uri Avnery
(Saturday, April 5, 2008)

"The world media are shedding tears for the Tibetan people, whose land is taken from them by Chinese settlers. Who cares about the Palestinians, whose land is taken from them by our settlers?"

"Hey! Take your hands off me! Not you! You!!!" - the voice of a young woman in the darkened cinema, an old joke.

"Hey! Take your hands off Tibet!" the international chorus is crying out, "But not from Chechnya! Not from the Basque homeland! And certainly not from Palestine!" And that is not a joke.

LIKE EVERYBODY else, I support the right of the Tibetan people to independence, or at least autonomy. Like everybody else, I condemn the actions of the Chinese government there. But unlike everybody else, I am not ready to join in the demonstrations.

Why? Because I have an uneasy feeling that somebody is washing my brain, that what is going ...

Russia: Examining Moscow's Motives In Georgia's Frozen Conflicts

The timing of Russia's move this week to forge closer links with two Georgian separatist regions has raised more than a few eyebrows in Tbilisi and the West.

In explaining President Vladimir Putin's decision, which calls for establishing  formal ties with businesses and organizations in the pro-Moscow breakaway provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Kamynin said the move "does not mean that Russia has chosen the course of confrontation" with Tbilisi.

Yet it comes just weeks after Georgia secured a pledge of eventual NATO membership during the alliance's Bucharest summit, and shortly after Tbilisi proposed a new peace plan for Abkhazia.

The United States, the European Union, and NATO have joined Georgia in condemning the step, which ...

People in Kabardino-Balkaria approve Putin's instructions to support Abkhazia and South Ossetia

The public of Kabardino-Balkaria is positive towards the orders issued by Russian President Vladimir Putin on rendering subject support to Russian citizens living in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Ramazan Sugkoev, Chairman of the Ossetian Cultural Centre in Kabardino-Balkaria, said: "For many years, we observe the situation in South Ossetia, we are distressed with the future of the region; therefore, we took these steps as a large positive step towards solution this complicated problem."

The  "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that Mr Sugkoev also said that recently he had sent, on behalf of the Ossetian Diaspora in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), a cable to Boris Gryzlov, in which he expressed support of the appeal of the Parliament of South Ossetia on recognition of the independence of this Republic.

"We don't understand the position of the West," Ramazan Sugkoev went on, ...
