ILL-Gotten Gains Never Prosper
2-APR-2006

The news agencies reported today, the second of April, 2006, that the Culture Minister of the North Caucasus Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria was subjected to ethnically motivated attack in Moscow.
"Unidentified people injured Kabardino-Balkaria Culture Minister Zaur Tutov at 21.30 Moscow time Saturday." He tried to protect children who had been leaving a local "house of culture" following a dancing training session
Moscow prosecutors said, that they had opened investigation into the incident, and added that Mr. Tutov had arrived to hospital an hour later with a cheekbone fracture and other injuries, and was still in the hospital.
The Kabardino-Balkaria president's press service said Tutov, also a famed baritone, had been attacked by 15 people who had shouted "Russia for Russians". The prosecutors said other versions, except ethnically motivated violence, would be investigated! Caucasus republic's minister attacked in Moscow

02/04/2006 10:55 NALCHIK/MOSCOW, April 2 (RIA Novosti) - The culture minister of Russia's North Caucasus republic has suffered what Kabardino-Balkarian officials said was an ethnically motivated attack in Moscow.

"Unidentified people injured Kabardino-Balkarian Culture Minister Zaur Tutov in a sporadic conflict at 21.30 Moscow time Saturday," Moscow prosecutors said, adding that they had opened investigation into the incident.

They also said that Tutov had arrived at a hospital an hour later with a cheekbone fracture and other injuries, and was still in the hospital.

The Kabardino-Balkarian president's press service said Tutov, also a famed baritone, had been attacked by 15 people who had shouted "Russia for Russians!"

Prosecutors said other versions, except ethnically motivated violence, would be investigated as well.

The government of the largely Muslim Caucasus republic also accused police that had arrived at the scene of reluctance to capture the attackers and demanded a thorough investigation.

Toronto Star: Gaseous Odour Clings To Schroeder

posted by FerrasB on as Imperialism

Gaseous odour clings to Schroeder
It's the sort of behaviour we have — sadly — come to expect from some in Congress. But when Gerhard Schroeder, the former German chancellor, announced last week that he was going to work for Gazprom, the Russian energy behemoth, he catapulted himself into a different league.

It's one thing for a legislator to resign his job, leave his committee chairmanship and go to work for a company over whose industry he once had jurisdiction. It's quite another thing when the chancellor of Germany leaves his job and goes to work for a company controlled by the Russian government that is helping to build a Baltic Sea gas pipeline that he championed while in office.

To make the decision even more unpalatable, it turns out that the chief executive of the pipeline consortium is a former East German secret police officer who was friendly with Vladimir Putin, the ...

Dniester region to hold referendum on independence

31.03.2006, 17.50

TIRASPOL, March 31 (Itar-Tass) - Moldova's breakaway Dniester region will hold a referendum on independence, and let international observers monitor it, said a declaration adopted by the 6th extraordinary congress of the deputies of all levels.

The congress took place in Tiraspol on Friday. It addressed the parliaments of Russia and Ukraine with the request to initiate the recognition of independence of the Dniester region.

The deputies also urged Russia to boost the peacekeeping contingent in the region in connection with the tensions that developed after Kiev imposed a new customs regime on the Dniester stretch of the Moldova-Ukrainian border.

"Over the years of its existence, the Dniester region has proved its independence and self-sufficiency. The objective of the new plebiscite is to make sure international organizations hear the opinion of our people," speaker of the Dniester parliament Yevgeny Shevchuk said.

He objected to the Dniester ...

ESTONIA

National media have reprinted a Wall Street Journal article by former Estonian Prime Minister Mart Laar, who criticizes the Russian President's proposals on energy security. "Russian President Vladimir Putin raised a number of fundamental energy challenges in his Feb. 28 editorial feature 'Lighting the Way'. Somehow Mr. Putin's article reminded me of speeches of former Soviet leaders, when peace was praised but in reality preparations for war were made. Russia's recent actions against Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia have made absolutely clear that Moscow has decided to use energy deliveries as a political weapon. ...We can treat Mr. Putin's words as a cynical ploy." (Postimees, March 22.)

Analysts are looking for ways of reducing Moscow's "energy charm" and stressing Estonia's role as a Western ally. "Instead of waiting for one more gloomy attack from Russia, Estonia should seize diplomatic initiative itself. G7 leaders ...
