Adygeia’s President Confronts Kremlin 13-Apr-06 Leader puts his future – and that of his small republic – on the line. By Marieta Kumpilova in Maikop (CRS No. 335, 13-Apr-06) The president of the small North Caucasian republic of Adygeia is engaged in a showdown in which the stake is not only his own political survival, but that of Adygeia itself. Khazret Sovmen, the metal-industry magnate who has been leader of Adygeia for the past four years, met the head of President Vladimir Putin’s administration on April 11 after publicly criticising Putin’s representative for the Southern Federal District – which includes the North Caucasus - Dmitry Kozak. Before the meeting, Sovmen said he hoped to receive an expression of “full confidence” from the Kremlin, “if there is no negative interference from the Southern Federal District”. Anti-terrorist center in Nalchik attacked

NALCHIK, April 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Unidentified gunmen have attacked the building of the local anti-terrorist center “T” of Kabardino-Balkaria’s Interior Ministry with a grenade launcher. One of the attackers was killed, sources in the republic’s law enforcement have told Itar-Tass.
Kabardino-Balkaria’s Prosecutor Yuri Ketov said the grenade exploded on the T-center premises on a watchtower. An investigation is in progress. The incident occurred at about 12:00 Moscow time. http://itar-tass.com/eng/level2.html?NewsID=6268783&PageNum=1

Mass grave discovered in Grozny contains bodies of guerrillas and civilians By Umalt Chadayev CHECHNYA - In early April it was reported that a mass grave had been discovered in the grounds of Kirov Park, in Grozny’s Leninsky district. The remains of a total of 57 people have been extracted from the place. According to representatives of the law enforcement agencies, six bodies have not yet been identified. It is planned to send their remains to the South Russian city of Rostov-on-Don for forensic medical examination. One of the inhabitants of Grozny who was an eyewitness of the sad events told Prague Watchdog’s correspondent that the burial of people in the grounds of Kirov Park took place in the winter of 2000, when Russian soldiers stormed the Chechen capital.
