4.04.2005 An outstanding humanist The Vatican announced Saturday evening that the pope died. With his globetrotting and visits to more than 100 countries, he increased the international presence and clout of the papacy and drew attention to human rights and world peace. In many areas John Paul II was ahead of his time, and even began to use his position in the Church to speak out on world affairs. His relentless fight against human rights breaches, oppression, bondage and war gained him not only admirers within the Church, but worldwide. Since his first days in the Vatican, he showed an impressive grasp of peace-making diplomacy, which the most-traveled pope in history often translated into action on his numerous visits to foreign countries. 24.03.2005 Streets of two generals Explaining the decision to name a Warsaw traffic circle (“rondo” in Polish) after Dzhokhar Dudayev, a representative of city authorities said the following: “We were supported some 20 years ago during the martial law, so now, we have a moral obligation to support these who fight for their inalienable rights.” This decision caused an angry reaction from Moscow. Earlier Moscow had already been indignant – there are streets and squares named President Dzhokhar Dudayev in 19 cities of the world, but the latest reaction has been the most harsh. When streets named after the Chechen president appeared in Vilnius, Riga and Lvov, the Kremlin expressed a light bewilderment. Why did the decision of the Warsaw city authorities cause such angry reaction from Russia? No one speaks about bewilderment. Koizumi promises to step up talks on Southern Kuriles 04.04.2005, 11.26 TOKYO, April 4 (Itar-Tass) - Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi promised here on Monday to step up the talks with Russia on the Southern Kuriles problem. He voiced it in the course of his meeting with the leaders of the country’s northernmost prefecture, Hokkaido, and with activists of the movement for “the return of the northern territories” as the disputed islands are called here. “We wish to notify Russia that our people are unanimous on this problem,” the premier stated. Tokyo wants Moscow to recognise Japan’s sovereignty over the Southern Kuriles, claiming that they are part and parcel of Hokkaido both geographically and historically. Tokyo promises to be ready, after its sovereignty over the islands is recognised, to flexibly consider the terms and time limits for the handover of the islands.
