Russia says UN, NATO calls for Uzbek probe 'unfair'
Wed May 25, 2005 08:52 AM ET

By Gleb Bryanski

ARE, Sweden (Reuters) - Russia on Wednesday denounced as unfair a call by the United Nations and NATO for an international investigation into a military crackdown in Uzbekistan, in which hundreds of people may have died.

Moscow backs the Uzbek government in blaming the bloodshed in the town of Andizhan earlier this month on radical Islamists.

Witnesses say more than 500 people died when troops put down a popular protest. Uzbek leader Islam Karimov denies ordering troops to fire and Uzbek authorities say 169 people died, most of them "bandits."

BAKU TODAY: Russia Refuses To Pull Out Bases From Georgia By 2008

Russia Refuses to Pull Out Bases from Georgia by 2008

07/05/2005 07:46

Georgian Foreign Minister Salome Zourabichvili said on May 6 after four-hour long talks with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow that the sides failed to reach an agreement over the timeframe of Russian bases withdrawal from Georgia.

“The [Georgian] President will not arrive in Moscow, as nothing important [has been agreed] that could be worth of visiting [Moscow],” Zourabichvili said in an interview with Rustavi 2 television.

Georgian insists to close down military bases in Batumi and Akhalkalaki by January 1, 2008, however the Russian said says this period is not enough for withdrawal of Russian servicemen and military hardware from Georgia.

President George Bush has waded into a bitter historical row between Russia and its former imperial vassals the Baltic states, putting the Kremlin's nose out of joint just days before he visits Moscow.

To compound Russia's discomfort Mr Bush has also decided to combine his Moscow visit with tub-thumping pro-democracy tours of two countries that the Kremlin regards as staunchly anti-Russian: Georgia and Latvia.

Mr Bush is due to review a spectacular military parade in Red Square along with other world leaders on 9 May, the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany. His attendance had been considered a coup for President Vladimir Putin, whom Washington has criticised of late for apparent backsliding on democracy and general authoritarianism.

But Mr Bush has shown he will not shrink from his "spreading democracy" message and has sided ...
