Anzor Astemirov

Journalist Fatima Tlisova recently conducted an interview with Anzor Astemirov, who was the leader of Islamic militants in Kabardino-Balkaria and more recently became head of the Sharia courts for the Caucasus Emirate, the radical wing of the North Caucasian insurgency. The Jamestown Foundation believes the views of this controversial figure will be of interest to readers of the North Caucasus Weekly. However, publication of the interview does not in any way constitute an endorsement of the views expressed in it.

Inside Russia's military

By Tim Whewell

Drive into the sprawling base of the Russian Army's 76th Airborne Division in the north-western town of Pskov, and you are greeted by a large mural with the unit's motto "Honour, Glory, Professionalism".

The first two words reflect age-old concepts in the armed forces; the third, a very new one.

If you have not heard much about the reform, that is not surprising.

It is so wide-reaching, and so controversial that the Kremlin is not keen to ...

E-Eriana: Russia Has 'Chechnya' Ploy For Afghanistan

Russia has 'Chechnya' ploy for Afghanistan
Asia Times

By Dmitry Shlapentokh

[Printer Friendly Version]

With the administration of United States President Barack Obama treating the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan as a priority, given the resurgence of the Taliban, Russia has become an important player in the region.

Moscow has indicated its apparent support for the US by allowing the transit of supplies for Afghanistan through its territory. On the other hand, the decision by the government in Kyrgyzstan to close the US base at Manas is attributed to Russian pressure.

There therefore remains a widespread perception in the West that Russia is enjoying the US's struggles in Afghanistan, given the history of the Soviet Union's quagmire in that country during the 1980s.

There might be some truth in this, but Russia has a compelling reason to be involved in Afghanistan. This is not because of any grand ideas of empire-building; rather it ...

More than 1,000 people, including officers of the 67th Brigade of GRU Special Assignment Forces GRU Forces slated to be disbanded, staged a protest in Berdsk, a city of 90,000 people near Novosibirsk, according to TASS-Sibir and other news agencies (www.news.babr.ru/?IDE=51467 and www.dpni.org/articles/lenta_novo/11659/).

Gorbachev criticises Putin's party

Gorbachev's reform polices helped contribute to the end of the Cold War and fall of the Soviet Union [AP]

Mikhail Gorbachev, the former president of the Soviet Union, has likened United Russia, the party of Vladimir Putin, Russia's prime minister, to the worst of the Soviet-era communists.

"I criticise United Russia a lot, and I do it directly,'' he said in an interview with the Associated Press on Thursday.

Gorbachev said: "It is a party of bureaucrats and the worst version of the CPSU (the Communist Party of the Soviet Union".

United Russia was formed by the Kremlin during Putin's 2000-2008 presidency as its main political machine, and currently dominates the national parliament.

Commenting on Russia's parliament, Gorbachev, said: "I ...
