Abkhazia, too, calls for recognition
Sukhum - Like South Ossetia, Abkhazia also called on the international community to recognize its independence.

The Abkhazian Parliament granted official approval in its Friday session to a draft resolution that called on the international community to recognize its independence.

In its appeal to the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU) and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the The Abkhazian Parliament stressed that Abkhazia deserved to be recognized because it met all the requisites for statehood. In a separate written statement, the Abkhazian Parliament called on both Duma, the lower chamber of the Russian Parliament, and the Council of Federation, the upper chamber, to recognize Abkhazia. Gazprom cuts Ukraine gas supply
Gazprom says its supplies to Europe
will not be affected

Russia has cut gas supplies to Ukraine by 25 per cent after the two countries failed to reach agreement in a debt dispute, Sergei Kupriyanov, a spokesman for Russian gas export monopoly Gazprom, has said.

"Gazprom today reduced supplies to Ukraine by 25 percent from 10:00 am," (0700 GMT), Kupriyanov said in televised comments on Monday.
But Gazprom has pledged its exports to Europe would not be affected.

"Gazprom is a reliable gas supplier, but we cannot and won't supply gas without payment," Kupriyanov said.
He said deliveries to Ukraine had been reduced by 40 million cubic metres a day.

Ukraine's state energy firm, Naftogas, confirmed that supplies had been reduced, but gave a different figure of 30 million cubic metres a day.

It also said the reduction was not significant and would have no impact on ...

Today, the Parliament of Abkhazia has passed two appeals with a demand to recognize the state independence of the Republic of Abkhazia. Russia Cashes in on Kosovo Fears
By Yuri Zarakhovich/Moscow

By splitting the West and the wider international community, the U.S.-backed declaration of independence by Kosovo has given Russia an opening. Countries concerned with separatist problems of their own, from Spain or Cyprus to China, have been unable to follow the U.S. lead in recognizing Kosovo's breakaway from Serbia. And Russia has sought to exploit the gaps that have emerged as a result.

In Serbia, itself, Russia capitalized literally, on the standoff over Kosovo. In Belgrade, just a week before he became Russia's President-elect, Dmitri Medvedev supervised Serbia's signing up to a prospective Russian Southern Stream natural gas pipe-line. Serbia also sold to Russia a 51% stake of Naftna Industrija Srbija (NIS), a much prized national oil company for $614 million and the promise of a further investment of $770 million. Russia plans build a major gas storage facility in Serbia, ...

Regarding Vladimir Putin and the upcoming American Presidential race I have some good news and I have some bad news.

Regarding Vladimir Putin and the upcoming American Presidential race I have some good news and I have some bad news.

One of the TV journalists asked the Democratic candidates about their opinion of President Putin. Both candidates were basically in agreement about the Russian president. They spoke of how democratic reforms had been circumvented and the increasing concentration of power Putin had acquired made him a virtual dictator. They commented about Putin's KGB background and how it seemed the former secret police now called the FSB has a large number of members involved in running the country. It was like they were describing a little weasel you had to watch all the time or he would break into your chicken coup and kill all the chickens. It's clear they don't particularly like Putin and most definitely do not trust him. The good news ...
