Pakhomov urges Imereti residents to move out before March 31

feb 16 2009, 21:00

Anatoly Pakhomov, Acting Mayor of the city of Sochi, has notified the residents of the Imereti Valley that to clear space for construction of Olympic objects they should finally move out of their houses by March 31.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on February 12, this deadline was announced by Vasily Naziradze, deputy head of the administration of the Krasnodar Territory.

On February 14, more than 100 local residents rallied in a small lobby of the local rural school. Only the 29 residents of the Nizhne-Imeretinskaya Street, whose houses are subject to demolition, were invited to this meeting. However, much more people came to talk to Mr Pakhomov.

Conflicted Russia gives and takes on Afghanistan

Mixed signals ensue as Moscow seeks to improve relations with the West by offering help with Afghanistan while trying to maintain control over Central Asia.

Reporting from Moscow -- Russia seems to have a message for the Obama administration: Go ahead and boost your military effort in Afghanistan -- but not without our help.

Russia marks Afghanistan retreat
Russian veterans warn that the US could make
the same mistakes in Afghanistan [Reuters]

Remembrance ceremonies marking the 20th anniversary of the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan have been held in Russia, amid warnings the US risks repeating the mistakes Moscow made during the conflict.

Events in Russia and other former Soviet states on Sunday were low-key, with wreaths laid at memorials and medals handed out to veterans.

The war, which began in 1979, left more than 13,000 Soviets dead and may have killed as many as one million Afghans.

"It's like fighting sand. No force in the world can get the better of the Afghans," Oleg Kubanov, a former officer, said at an anniversary concert in Moscow.

"It's their holy land, it doesn't matter ...

e-Ariana: Moscow Again Eyes Afghanistan 20 Years After Retreat

Moscow again eyes Afghanistan 20 years after retreat

Christian Science Monitor

By Fred Weir

Fearful that US failure there could unleash the Taliban and other Islamist insurgencies, Russia may help NATO open a supply line through former Soviet territory.

MOSCOW - When the USSR ended its disastrous near decade-long occupation of Afghanistan – the last Soviet troops were extracted 20 years ago Sunday – war hero Gen. Makhmut Gareyev was left behind to advise the Kremlin's client regime on means of survival. He too fled three years later as waves of Islamist rebels, formerly armed by the US, hammered at the gates of Kabul.

General Gareyev, now president of the Russian Academy of Military Sciences, believes the perceived threats that originally induced the USSR to invade Afghanistan are still very much alive. The Kremlin leadership feared the spread of Iranian-style Islamist revolution to Soviet central Asia, a challenge that has only ...
