Russia leaves it up to its alliances to decide

Moscow/Agency Caucasus - Recent speculations in the Russian news media say that the Russian administration will leave it up to its alliances to decide whether or not to grant official recognition to Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Citing anonymously a official of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Nezavisimaya Gazeta wrote that Moscow, the political capital of Russia, would not recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia. However, the newspaper hinted at the possibility of Abkhazia and South Ossetia being granted recognition from such alliances of Russia as Belarus and Tajikistan. This possibility might come true, the newspaper wrote, when the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) had its summit either in Minsk or Bishkek.

Financial aid to continue

Whether or not Russia will recognize both countries, it will continue to supply financial aid to them. This was evidently put ...

Zakayev congratulates Kosovans
Prime Minister Ahmed Zakayev of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria wrote a congratulatory letter to Hashim Thachi, Prime Minister of Kosovo, a central European country that has just recently declared its independence.

Zakayev congratulated all Kosovans on their eventual attainment of an independent state status. Zakayev said that Chechens were pleased to see Kosovans as their independent brothers because Chechens had been fighting to gain independence for 14 years now, as well.

Zakayev hailed Kosovo's declaration of independence as a milestone in the last half century that international affairs had not been determined by the Security Council of the United Nations, or UN, in which five countries hold a right to veto--meaning that the power of the minority at the UN Security Council to veto was now outdated because it was not any more as effective as it was ...

'Document of call to be completed very soon'
Moscow/Agency Caucasus - After Abkhazia and South Ossetia postponed on Friday issuing their call on the leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) to recognize the independence of the two countries while they met in Moscow, capital of Russia, officials told reporters that the postponement occurred because the final version of the document of call had not yet been completed.

The official document of call would be wholly prepared within days and be immediately thereafter delivered to Russia, the CIS countries and the United Nations, said Sergei Bagapsh, President of Abkhazia.

Bagapsh said that he would meet with leaders of South Ossetia, a 'de facto' republic just as Abkhazia is, and Transdniester within 10 days, and added that they would work on basic plans for future joint action.

The basic plans include the completion ...

Saakashvili appears to be guaranteed by Putin

Saakashvili appears to be guaranteed by Putin
Moscow/Agency Caucasus - Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili appeared after his talks with Russian officials in Russia's capital Moscow to be guaranteed by Russia's President Vladimir Putin that Russia would definitely not recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

"There is recently some speculation in the news media about Kosovo, Abkhazia and South Ossetia. However, Russia made it clear that it would recognize neither Abkhazia nor South Ossetia," said Saakashvili after he met with Putin.

Given his statement, Saakashvili appeared to give up his promises he made prior to the January elections that he would regain the administrative control over Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

This time Saakashvili stressed the role of diplomacy and said that the Georgian Group of Friendship negotiations, conducted in Genova between February 18 and 19, turned out to be positive and constructive. "It was a much ...

Once again the world's great powers are manoeuvring over the political fate of the Balkans.

A week after Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia, and days before Russians go to the polls to select a new president, Dmitry Medvedev, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister and expected successor to President Vladimir Putin, has vowed to support Serbia's claim to Kosovo.

In Belgrade yesterday for talks with President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, Mr. Medvedev said Kosovo's declaration of independence is "absolutely at variance with international law."

"We proceed from the assumption that Serbia is a united country, whose jurisdiction covers the whole of its territory, and we shall stick to this principled stand," he said after ...
