Czech Republic Accuses Russia of Intimidation, Says Will Build Up Defense

20,02,2007

MosNews

The Czech Republic said on Tuesday it would not be intimidated by Russia over plans to site parts of a U.S. missile defence system on its soil, and said attempts at “blackmail” by Moscow would backfire.

the Reuters news agency quoted Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg sas saying that threats by Russian officials over the plans, which would involve placing a radar system on Czech territory and a missile battery in Poland, would only make Czechs more determined to defend themselves.

Russia’s strategic forces commander, General Nikolai Solovtsov, said on Monday that Russia would be capable of firing missiles at the Czech Republic and Poland if the ex-communist states agreed to host the U.S. defence system.

“The Czechs will now think the shield is even more necessary,” Schwarzenberg told Reuters on the sidelines of a ...

By Roman Kupchinsky

RFE/RL -- News Analysis graphic, button, bug
(RFE/RL)
February 21, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin stirred up a hornet's nest when he publicly announced earlier this month that the Ukrainian government had approached Russia with the idea of unifying the countries' respective gas-pipeline networks.

Putin hailed the overture, coupled with Ukrainian interest in drilling for natural gas on Russian territory, as a "revolutionary development" that was in the "interest of both countries."

Circling The Wagons

Ukrainian officials and lawmakers responded quickly to Putin's comments, made on February 1 to reporters assembled for the annual Munich Conference on Security Policy.

Within days, legislation had been passed forbidding the sale or transfer of ownership of Ukraine's trunk gas pipeline to another country. An investigation was also launched to determine just who may have been responsible for ...

Russian Parliament Rejects Power Sharing Agreement With Muslim Internal Republic

21.02.2007

MosNews
Russia’s upper house of parliament on Wednesday rejected an agreement on separation of authority between the federal government and Tatarstan, The Associated Press news agency reports.
The Federation Council voted 93-13 with 15 abstensions to reject the document, which maintained the Tatar language’s dominant status in the province and reaffirmed local authorities’ grip on its mineral wealth. The lower house of Russian parliament approved the agreement earlier this month.
Both houses of parliament are dominated by the Kremlin, and the rejection of the treaty by the upper house indicated its desire to keep Tatarstan’s ambitions at bay.
The oil-rich, predominantly Muslim region on the Volga River has enjoyed the broadest autonomy among Russian provinces, and fears that it may try to secede following Chechnya’s ...

February 23, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Ukraine's acting security chief, Valentyn Nalyvaichenko, says Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov will face a "tough reaction" for comments made during a visit to the Crimea region, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reported.

During a visit to Sevastopol on February 21, Luzhkov promised support for ethnic Russians in Crimea and thanked the region for opposing Ukraine's efforts to cooperate with NATO.

Luzhkov also decried Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev's turning over of Crimea -- where Russia's Black Sea Fleet is located -- to Ukraine in 1954.

Ukrainian officials accused Luzhkov of questioning Crimea's status as part of Ukraine.

Speaking at a joint press conference with acting Foreign Minister Volodymyr ...
