On December 11, the largest ever Russian nationalist riots in modern Russia broke out in Moscow. The protesters, consisting of about 5,000 soccer fans and members of several Russian nationalist organizations, gathered at Manezh Square, which is adjacent to the Kremlin and Red Square. They shouted "Russia for Russians,” "Moscow for Muscovites,” and expletive-filled anti-Caucasian slogans, and attacked passersby who were assumed to be from the Caucasus or of Asian origin. Moscow’s police chief, Vladimir Kolokoltsev, arrived at the scene and tried to calm the crowd down, with partial success. The protesters eventually clashed with police, who pressed them out of the square into the Moscow metro, where the rioters continued to attack those they deemed non-Russians, specifically those with darker facial features and of Asian appearance, accompanying their assaults with shouts ... >> full

Riot police officers detain protesters outside the Kievsky train station in Moscow.
Rioting by nationalist youths and football fans on December 11, in Moscow was followed by fresh outbreaks of violence on December 15. Russian and non-Russian rioters known in Russia as "Caucasians” –representing different ethnic groups from the North and South Caucasus– are reported to have clashed with each other and with riot police (Otryad Militsii Osobogo Naznatcheniya–OMON). Security forces in Moscow chased groups of young hooligans in the Metro system and there were massive arrests. The Moscow city police department has reported over 1,300 were detained and 30 injured (Interfax, December 16). There were lesser-scale ethnic clashes in the streets of St. Petersburg, Samara and Rostov-on-Don (RIA Novosti, December 15).

Window on Eurasia: Surkov Says Moscow Won’t Be ‘Handed Over’ to North CaucasiansPaul Goble
Staunton, December 16 – In the course of a wide-ranging interview published today about the modernization of Russia, Vladislav Surkov says that "we will not hand over our city to various newly declared ‘Uncle Hasans’ and their followers,” Russian slang for Muslim criminals and words that are likely to further divide Russian society. On the one hand, many ethnic Russian nationalists are likely to conclude that the powers that be are now on their side and will back popular moves against North Caucasians. And on the other, many North Caucasians are likely to reach the same conclusion and decide either to resist or to strike first. And consequently, the words of the influential first deputy head of the Presidential Administration, may spark even more violent clashes like those which have taken place in Moscow and other ... >> full

The time has come to harvest the seeds of hatred you have sown over the past ten years. You closed your ears to the democratic warnings given from inside and outside. You silenced any kind of public opposition by using military force. You murdered many individuals who had the courage to stand up and be counted. You organized hundreds of thousands of young people around your party in power to leave them in the hands of Neo-Nazism. While obliterating the federal structure step by step, you also destroyed your federal culture. And now, at the dawn of a rising fascism, we say to you: Good morning, Russia!
Fans of Spartak Moscow carried out one of their typical attacks in Moscow on December 6th. Aslan Cherkesov, who is originally from Kabardino Balkaria, responded to the assault carried by his attackers and unfortunately caused the death of one of ... >> full

Window on Eurasia: ‘Without the Formation of a Common Identity for Its Citizens, Russia has No Future,’ Markedonov SaysPaul Goble
Vienna, December 14 – Even more than the modernization of the economy, the Russian Federation needs a modernization of nationality policy, one that will promote a common identity for all its citizens because if that does not happen, a leading Russian specialist on ethnic issues says, "Russia has no future.” In a comment published in "Gazeta.ru” today, Sergey Markedonov, one of Russia’s most thoughtful commentators on ethnic conflicts, says that Moscow officials must stop thinking of nationality policy as a matter of folklore and ethnography and realize that it is about the fate of the country as a whole (www.gazeta.ru/comments/2010/12/13_x_3463345.shtml). Indeed, Markedonov begins, as the recent clashes in the Manezh and around the Russian Federation, show, "there is no other path for the struggle with xenophobia,. Ethnic criminality, closed migrant ... >> full
