Russian ministry defends right to have 'specific interests' in post-Soviet space
Interfax

Moscow, 29 December: Russia has the right to specific interests in the post-Soviet space, but they do not clash with the interests of other states, Russian First Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Denisov has said.

"There is a certain suspicion that maybe Russia thinks the independent states on its perimeter are not actually independent. But it is probably too late to lecture us - we understand this perfectly well ourselves," Denisov said today at a press conference in the central office of Interfax.

"We may have entirely specific, entirely obvious interests on the territory of those (post-Soviet - IF) states. These interests do not clash either with the interests of the states in question, or with the interests of any third countries," Denisov stressed

This is how Denisov responded ...

The Crisis in Georgia Is an Opening for the West: The Case for Tatarstan
By Katherine E. Graney

Besides sending shock waves through the international system and shaking up conventional wisdom about the post-Cold War European balance of power, the recent and brief Russo-Georgian war and Russia’s subsequent recognition of the “independent” states of South Ossetia and Abkhazia has also led to speculation about Russia’s own ethnic homelands and about its future as an ethno-federal state. In the wake of these events, independence-minded activists in the Russian national republics of Tatarstan and Ingushetia have made prominent claims that if Russia is willing to recognize the right of self-determination of Georgia’s former constituent ethno-federal units up to and including the right ...

Russia placed additional arms and troops to Abkhazia, thus provoking new tensions in the conflict area, Georgian State Minister for Conflict Settlement David Bakradze said at a special briefing on 12 November.

He stated at the special briefing today that 5 units of tank T-72, 4 units of "Grad", 5 units of armored vehicles, 7 howitzers and 200 servicemen from amongst Chechen murtads were introduced to the military base located in Ochamchire.

"The introduction of military equipment and manpower to Abkhazia is continuing," Georgian minister emphasized.

"I want to categorically warn everyone: an increase in Russian troop levels in Abkhazia is absolutely illegal and it will be met with a severe response and grave consequences, David Bakradze threatened.

Bakradze noted that this step is directly aimed at aggravating the situation in Abkhazia and provoking ...

Russian troops leave Georgia
Publication time: 15 November 2007, 08:01
Russia says it has completed pulling out its troops from Russia, leaving only "peacekeepers" behind.

The move comes as Georgia is set to lift its week-long state of emergency after police broke up protests in the capital, Tbilisi, according to its parliamentary speaker.

Nino Burjanadze announced that the emergency rule, imposed after alleged Russian interference in Georgian politics, would be lifted on Friday "on all the country's territory".

The presence of Russian troops - based in Georgia since the collapse of the Soviet Union - had been a constant irritant between the two countries.

Early on Thursday, General Alexei Maslov, a top Russian military official, confirmed that Russia was pulling out its troops from Georgia.

"There are no more Russian troops in Georgia, there remain only peacekeepers... in Abkhazia, and those that are part of the combined forces in ...

First pipeline to provide Europe with non-Russian gas supply
Publication time: 19 November 2007, 19:37
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Greek counterpart, Costas Karamanlis, yesterday inaugurated a pipeline that will transport the first non-Russian supply of natural gas to Europe, a step expected to ease Russia's hold on Europe's energy supplies.

The pipeline is also a symbol of a new era of economic cooperation between archrivals Turkey and Greece. "We are forming a bridge as an energy transit country. ... This pipeline will bring prosperity to the area, in all fields," Prime Minister Erdoğan said at a ceremony on a bridge over the Meriç (Evros in Greek) River that separates the two countries. "The Silk Road will also become an energy route linking East and West through Turkey," he added.

Erdoğan and Karamanlis shook hands in the middle of the bridge to inaugurate the 300-kilometer pipeline in a ceremony also attended by ...
