Saakashvili Asks EU to Protect Georgia From Russia

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili appealed to the European Union on Tuesday for solidarity in his country’s standoff with Russia, the Reuters news agency reported on Tuesday.
The pro-Western leader called for the EU to involve itself in negotiations to help resolve Georgia’s disputes with Moscow. He also warned Europeans they too could face politically motivated gas price increases if Russia got away with doing that to Georgia.

“Today, because we have chosen to move as close as possible to Europe and to align ourselves with Euro-Atlantic structures, Georgia is punished,” Saakashvili said in an address to the European Parliament.

Irked by the pro-Western Georgian leader’s drive to join the EU and above all the U.S.-led NATO military alliance, Russia has severed trade and transport links and hardened its backing for two breakaway regions of Georgia.

Russia’s conflict with Georgia shows no sign of abating and has led to unprecedented purges of Georgians, and even of Russian citizens, in Russia. Hundreds, if not thousands, have been arrested and sentenced to deportation. Prominent Russian citizens, ethnic Georgians such as the sculptor Zurab Tsereteli and the writer Boris Akunin, have been harassed.

Moreover, the campaign is not limited to Georgians but has implications for all those whom Russians call people of “Caucasian nationality,” that is, those who come from the Caucasus, including Chechens. And mistreating them, authorities often make no difference between citizens of the Russian Federation and those who are legally foreigners.

Georgia accuses Russia of fascism

Georgia has compared Moscow's actions towards Georgians with persecutions of Jews in Germany in 1930s, the Reuters reports.

Georgiy Baramidze, Georgian State Secretary for Euro-Atlantic integration matters, told to the press conference in Brussels: "Russia is exhibiting an absolutely unacceptable behaviour by pursuing the policy of ethnic cleansings and using xenophobic rhetoric."

Earlier in November, Mikhail Saakashvili, president of Georgia, has already compared persecution of Georgians with that of Jews, the "Gazeta.Ru" writes.

The Russian Federation has earlier suspended the air, railway, automobile and postal communications with Georgia. The sanctions followed the espionage scandal that burst out in Georgia on September 27; then, messages started to appear on numerous oppression cases of Georgian natives by representatives of power structures. Within several recent weeks, several hundreds illegal immigrants have been deported to Georgia.

kept and demonstrated at St. Petersburg Museum of Anthropology and
Ethnography, which was presented by Russian soldiers to the Tsar's
government when he perished while he was defending the Caucasus

Americans warmly endorse Georgia's NATO ambitions, others are sceptical

A week before the first summit of a 26-member NATO in Riga, Georgia has been
buoyed by support from the US Senate for its NATO aspirations. But questions
remain as to how ready Georgia is to join the alliance.

Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili has declared 2006 "the year of NATO" and
promised that Georgia will join the alliance before his first term finishes at
the end of 2008. Saakashvili said that progress towards membership was
"irreversible" after Georgia was invited in September to move to the next phase
of cooperation with NATO known as "intensified dialogue".

On November 16, the US Senate gave Saakashvili a boost by unanimously passing a
bill expressing support for the accession of Albania, Croatia, Georgia, and
