Window on Eurasia: Sudanese Referendum Echoes in Russia

Paul Goble

Staunton, January 11 – The referendum on independence for Southern Sudan has prompted some Russians to complain that Moscow is more interested in the self-determination of people there than of Russians in the former Soviet republics, just one of the ways in which such issues anywhere in the world quickly acquire a Eurasian dimension. .
In a comment today, Modest Kolerov, the chief editor of the Regnum.ru news agency, complains that "the right of one of the peoples of Sudan for self-determination turns out to be more important for Russia than the right of the entire people of Transdniestria for independence” (www.regnum.ru/news/polit/1362872.html).
"Ever more often,” the nationalist editor continues, Russian diplomacy follows the West – in this case to the point of raising the level of "the representative of the mythical interests of Russia in Sudan to the level of a ...

Window on Eurasia: Simultaneous Opposition Arrests in Three Slavic States Point to Their Possible Re-Integration, Commentator Says

Paul Goble

Staunton, January 9 – The almost simultaneous arrests of opposition figures in Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine – the same three republics which signed the death warrant of the USSR 19 years ago – points to their isolation from Europe and hence re-integration under Russian rule, according to a Moscow commentator.
On his Ekho Moskvy blog today, Yuri Magarshak, the president of the International Committee for Intellectual Cooperation, calls attention to "the striking synchronicity” of the arrests of the leaders of opposition groups in the three Slavic states and discusses the possible meaning of this pattern (echo.msk.ru/blog/ym4/740351-echo/).
Magarshak points to the arrest and detention for 15 days of a former vice prime minister of Vladimir Putin, the arrest of leaders of the opposition in Belarus, including defeated presidential candidates, and the arrest of ...

Window on Eurasia: Encouraged by Moscow, Rusins Step Up Drive for Autonomy and Threaten Kyiv with Armed Revolt

Paul Goble

Staunton, January 7 – Only weeks after Russia’s consul general in Lviv called him the "Moses” of his people, Dmitry Sidor, an Uzhgorod priest loyal to Moscow who heads the Rusin movement in Transcarpathia, declared this week that "after many years” of using only political tactics, the Rusins are now prepared to "defend their freedom with arms in their hands.”
How seriously this threat should be taken is an open question. On the one hand, the Rusins have made similar threats before, most notably at the end of 2008. And on the other, an actual revolt as opposed to the threat of one would complicate Russian-Ukrainian relations and threaten Moscow’s oil and gas exports to Europe, much of which flows via Transcarpathia.
But however that may be, Sidor’s remark, especially coming ...

WikiLeaks. Estonia does not believe it can have normal relations with Russia

Publication time: 7 January 2011, 14:44

An Estonian weeklyEesti Ekspresspublished on Friday information from a secret cable by the U.S. Embassy in Estonia, revealed by Wikileaks, noting that the embassy turned to a place where Estonian politicians constantly come to complain about Russia.

The newspaper mentions Estonian politicians, among whom reins an "eloquent total disbelief in the improvement of relations with Russia". In particular, the cable quotes statements by the Director of the Russian Department in the Estonian Foreign Ministry, Mart Volmer, who said that establishing good relations with Russia was an "unrealistic goal".

An adviser to the Estonian Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Kyullike Sillaste-Elling, complained to the U.S. Embassy that local politicians feared to establish normal relations with their Russian counterparts.

"Any effort by the PM Andrus Ansip to engage in direct relations with either Putin or Medvedev would lead to a significant criticism from political rivals, regardless of the outcome", the leaked ...
