Window on Eurasia: Putin’s Repressive Policies Leading Russia toward ‘Big Blood,’ Opposition Leaders SayPaul Goble
Staunton, January 18 – Vladimir Putin has "chosen the Belarusian path of dictatorship and repression,” opposition figures, who were released this weekend after being detained in a sanctioned protest action on December 3, told the media yesterday, and the Russian leader has opened the way to future clashes and violence of the kind many call "big blood.” Three leading opposition figures, Eduard Limonov, the head of the banned National Bolshevik Party, Boris Nemtsov, a leader of Solidarity, and Ilya Yashin, a leader of Solidarity’s youth wing, whom Amnesty International had identified as "prisoners of conscience” spoke at a Moscow press conference (www.nr2.ru/moskow/316481.html). In the past, Limonov said, the powers had come after him for organizing "unsanctioned meetings,” something he never denied. But now officials appear to have decided on the use of "demonstrative force” and ... >> full

Chief Russian dissident: Russia is a large concentration camp that should be surrounded by a cordon sanitairePublication time: Today at 13:05 Emirate time
The chief Russian dissident Vladimir Bukovsky told about the situation in the KGB Russia on eve of its collapse:
"On 11 December, the Kremlin's directors showed us at the Manezh Square in Moscow another horror story designed to scare us and make them more acceptable for us - as the only "defenders" from the "wild" people.
It's time to get used to such performances. I'm not talking about the Pamyat society that played the same role at the dawn of Perestroika, or the "lawyer's son" Edelstein (Zhirinovsky). (When asked about his ethnic origín, the KGB officer "Zhirinovsky" replied that is a "lawyer's son" - KC)- Some eleven years ago, the same farce was played by our KGB masters with the apartment bombings in Moscow and the start of a new Chechen war. Everybody was scared, forgetting that "the hand of strong government" will ... >> full

Window on Eurasia: ‘Yugoslav Variant’ Threatens Russian Federation, Khalidov SaysPaul Goble
Staunton, January 8 – The Soviet Union disintegrated remarkably peacefully largely because the Russian nation and its leaders did not behave in the way that the Serbs and their leaders did in the former Yugoslavia, despite the fears of many at the time that what took place in Yugoslavia would presage what would occur in the USSR. But now, given the intensification of Russian nationalism and the willingness of some Russian leaders to play to that, a "Yugoslav variant” could threaten a disintegrating Russian Federation, the mere prospect of which should cause everyone to stop and think where their actions and statements may lead, according to an activist from the North Caucasus. In an article on the SKNews.ru portal, Denga Khalidov, vice president of the Russian Congress of Peoples of the Caucasus and of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems, ... >> full
