Russian TV Row Splits Azerbaijan

17-Jan-08

Speakers of Russian complain as broadcasting dispute leads to Moscow channels going off the air.

By Tamara Grigoryeva in Baku (17-Jan-08)
“Come in, my dear,” said the old woman, her thin bent form clothed in a sleeveless woollen jacket over a blue dress. She pushed open the door to admit a tall young man into her sitting-room, which overlooks a park in Baku, the Azerbaijani capital.

“Here it is, as good as new,” said 68-year-old Dina Vasilievna, pointing to her television set. “Now, son, how much would you give for it?”

The man, 29-year-old Elnur, buys up old televisions and other second-hand electronic equipment. He says the number of people selling off their televisions has risen sharply since the New Year, when the Russian television station RTR was taken off the air in Baku.

“Most of the people selling their TV sets are ...

Gen Baluyevsky sees a threat from countries seeking global hegemony
Russia's military chief of staff has said Moscow is ready to use force, including pre-emptively and with nuclear weapons, to defend itself.

Gen Yuri Baluyevsky said Russia had no plans to attack anyone, but it was important that other countries clearly understood its leaders' resolve.

Correspondents say the general's remarks do not mark a shift in policy.

But they are the latest in a string of assertive comments from Moscow when relations with the West are strained.

In a speech to a military conference broadcast on state-run cable TV, Gen Baluyevsky said there were potential threats to Russia from international terrorism or countries seeking global or regional hegemony.

"We do not intend to attack anyone, but we consider it necessary for all our partners in the ...

VEB to grant $80 bln loan to Russian enterprises

24/01/2008 15:22 DAVOS, January 24 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian state Development Bank (VEB) is planning to issue a two trillion ruble ($80 billion) loan to the Russian economy, the bank's chairman said on Thursday.

Vladimir Dmitriyev said VEB, a state-run corporation, would grant loans to companies in a variety of sectors, in particular infrastructure and power plant and oil refining projects.

He said VEB could become involved in implementing energy projects in Chechnya, building a power plant on the Argun River and modernizing the Grozny heat and electric power station, investing a total of around 6 billion rubles ($240 million).

VEB will also provide around $2 billion to a paper and pulp plant in the Lower Angara Area, whose construction is due to begin in mid-2009.

It was earlier reported that VEB would lend $2 billion ...

RUSSIA BUYS POWERFUL SUPERCOMPUTER

24-January-2008

IBM said in a statement on January 24 that Moscow State University has bought a Blue Gene supercomputer in the first sale of such technology to a former Soviet republic, Reuters reported from Moscow. The news agency noted that the "device is capable of 27.8 trillion operations per second [and will be used] in research on nanotechnology and [other] scientific applications, such as modeling the heart." The U.S. government uses versions of Blue Gene that Reuters described as almost 20 times more powerful than the model approved for sale to Russia. PM

RUSSIAN DAILY NOTES MINISTER'S 'PRAGMATIC' APPROACH

24-January-2008

The Russian daily "Gazeta" noted on January 24 that Foreign Minister Lavrov said the previous day that Russian foreign policy is based on pragmatism and not ideology. Lavrov added that Russia now has the political and financial resources to return to the world stage. The daily "Kommersant" suggested on January 24 that Lavrov was "optimistic" in his views on the future of the CIS. "The Moscow Times" wrote on January 24 that Lavrov "lashed out repeatedly at the European Union, saying that 'a reorganization of European architecture'" is one of Russia's top objectives for 2008. The "International Herald Tribune" on January 24 reported that Lavrov's comments on NATO "were unusually toughly worded." PM
